SeaWorld to STOP breeding killer whales and will not replace current generation in its care [tr]

SeaWorld announced on Thursday it would ends its killer whale breeding program, and those currently at its parks would be the last. The Orlando-based theme park has faced dwindling attendance and years of criticism over its treatment of the captive marine mammals as well as pressure from animal rights activists to end public exhibition of killer whales altogether. SeaWorld, which operates parks in San Diego, Orlando and San Antonio, said in November it would replace its signature 'Shamu' killer whale shows in San Diego with displays focused on conservation.

Well, you’re in luck.
Now that the AR activists have won with Orcas, big cats *ARE* next.

Carole Baskins and so-called “Big Cat Rescue” in Tampa are doing everything in their power to do to wild cat captivity, what Blackfish did to Sea World, including total internet and media saturation.

The only difference is that BCR takes it even further still, with their so-called “Twenty Year Extinction Plan”.

Better dead than bred and all of that.

I have always thought it inhumane to keep these animals in confinement. There’s something grotesque about confining animals & forcing them to perform tricks. Hope Sea world goes out of business.

Think of it from the whales’ point of view. Captivity for life, and no sex.

We went to SeaWorld in Orlando almost twenty years ago.

I didn't really get it. I did see some impressive large-scale engineering, but I doubt that even one in one hundred noticed it.

I too thought the massive, sterile white killer whale tank didn't look right as a habitat for wild animals. The whale act didn't impress me at all. Even if they had done the whole act the day we were there (which they didn't, the whales weren't cooperating or something), I just didn't find it to be very entertaining. They were constantly trying to emphasize their big commitment to conservation, which just didn't make sense in the context of the act itself.

I grew up during the SCUBA craze of the early 1960s, and I think SeaWorld is kind of a hold-over from that era, now an anachronism.

Your experience and impressions remind me of the film Blackfish. Normally I dismiss such documentaries as leftist tripe, but I couldn’t argue with much in that film.

I agree with you. Confinement is not the life for them. It's cruel.

They are given all the food they need. They are kept from predators, and given free health care. They have (until now) all the sex they want.

Not a bad life for a wild animal.

Most offspring are by artificial insemination these days.

“Not a bad life for a wild animal.”

By that argument, life in prison is pretty good. So what if you cannot move?

So all pets are in prison. Keeping a pet by your definition is cruel.

They are animals. Their life in captivity is far better than in the wild.

My father once told someone that, after 10,000 years of domestication, the natural habitat for a cow is a barn.

“Not an “animal rights” fanatic; but it would be OK with me
for animals to be left alone in the wild, the environment
where they belong. Have visited zoos all my life; but
seeing big cats caged & becoming mentally unbalanced by
the confinement is sad to me.”

Yep, Never liked zoos and animal shows for that reason. The animals all seem depressed and ragged.

The only zoo I enjoyed was the Monkey Jungle in Florida. The Monkeys get a huge natural habitat and the humans watch them from small cages

Vaguely recall that episode.
If you ever want to visit a fun shrine to Lloyd Bridge’s Sea Hunt character, Nelson, visit Palos Verdes CA,Terranea cliff side restaurant aptly named: Nelsons.
Terranea sea side hotel now sits on the old Marineland site pioneer Ocean theme park, predecessor to the Sea World franchise.
The views of Catalina island are Amazing, and it’s very common to see dolphins and whales migrating in the waters visible from Nelson’s patio.
Golf fans also like the top notch golf course that Trump has just down the road.

“And to think, fifty five years ago the TV show SEA HUNT with Lloyd Bridges, suggested that Killer Whales should be all wiped off the planet.

Some woman’s husband got eaten by a Killer Whale. Bridges later managed to kill it with an explosive headed spear or whale gun.”

I really don’t care about Sea World or their animals, but it’s the same people who have chased elephants out of the Bronx Zoo, which elephants brought so much happiness to my childhood.

We have to put an end to society’s deference to the SJW phenomenon.

We went to Fiesta Texas in San Antonio three years ago. Felt like we were in Mexico. What is it with Mexicans wearing their street clothes in the swimming pool? Place was jammed and we were one of the few English speaking families there. Crap strewn all over the place. Now this issue with Sea World, no more elephants at the circus.

There is no place to take my grandchildren any more that is fun, safe and familiar.

Right. I don’t think that a company focused so on “conservation” would mind my participating in the conservation activity - by conserving my scarce entertainment dollars, and redeploying them toward an alternative entertainment establishment.
