Decorated veterans star in tough new anti-Trump ads (Video)
The Hill ^ | 3-5-2016

Decorated veterans are going after Donald Trump’s character in hard-hitting new Florida ads designed to drive down the Republican presidential front-runner’s popularity to stop him winning the crucial winner-take-all state on March 15.

In new attack ads, released by conservative nonprofit American Future Fund within a multimillion-dollar rotation, two veterans, Afghanistan Special Forces Commander Lt. Col. Michael Waltz and retired Vietnam pilot and prisoner of war Lt. Col. Tom Hanton, hit Trump for dodging the draft in Vietnam, “serving only himself,” and for criticizing Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for being captured during the Vietnam War.

American Future Fund spokesman Stuart Roy said in an email to The Hill Saturday that the group is swapping out its current ads in the Florida Panhandle for the new veteran ads and said it "will be adding new money there on Monday, as well."

“The Panhandle is full of active and retired military. Think Eglin Air Force Base, Pensacola Naval Air Station, Hulburt Field, Naval Support Activity Panama City, and Tyndall Air Force Base.”

In one of the ads, Waltz tells viewers to put a stop Trump's campaign.

“Donald Trump hasn’t served this country a day in his life, essentially dodged the draft in Vietnam through multiple deferments,” Waltz says, speaking directly into the camera. “All Donald Trump has served is himself. Don’t let Donald Trump fool you. Look into his real record and stop Trump now."

I still haven’t gotten an explanation of how he pulled that off.

Who cares? Just wait till tomorrow, there will be more shit thrown on the wall by the MSM hoping something will stick enough to cause even more controversy........

I'll worry about Trump's alleged military deferments when they reach the same level of scrutiny as Clinton's........

As a side note, rumor has it that both Cruz and Rubio are anti-military which would explain why they never enlisted in any branch.

Why would anyone with their so called "Love for America" attitude choose to self indulge themselves by going to college rather than serving our country in the military? What were they afraid of?

Jiminy Christmas...can you people not read? Go read my 54. And as someone who did volunteer to wear the uniform I suppose I do think my opinion counts more than someone who didn’t. I said I suspect he did in fact use his family wealth and power to use all legal means to avoid service. BUT then I did leave the determination of whether that qualified as “dodging” to the grunts and jarheads who DID actually serve.

Is English your second language?!?

I am amazed how Fred Trump - who we NYers knew as a builder and landlord of middle-class buildings in Queens - has suddenly morphed into a power broker on the par with Robert Moses, Henry Kissinger and Roy Cohn and with the wealth of Nelson Rockefeller. The paranoia that has taken over Cruz supporters is as weird as it is asinine.

but I try to evaluate charges against Trump fairly.

Even the most casual reading of your posting history puts the lie to your words.

Seesh, how contemptuous of you to lie to posters here on FR

Your post:

“I think it highly likely that he used all legal means to avoid service.

1. You just said you “suspected” that he used power and wealth to avoid the draft.

2. Then the “suspected” morphed into he “did” dodge the draft.

3. Then you brought in the witness of the soldiers fighting in Viet Nam and presumed to know what was in their hearts and minds about someone who took deferments, medical passes.

4. I think any person would think that you rendered judgment.

Trump said what he said. “I like people who weren’t captured.”

It grows tiresome listening to some contort and excuse what Trump says.

I’m glad I went to Vietnam, and would do it again even knowing the outcome. That Trump avoided, or missed out on it is his misfortune. But that was then and this is now and there are larger fish to fry. If Trump is the nominee, he’ll have my vote.

Then, they could have volunteered when they both turned 18.

Not the same thing as intentionally avoiding serving. The Donald had to get deferments, Cruz and Rubio did not.

How so? The information to make such a determination simply is not there. What shows is a disqualification for medical reasons. The man may have flaws, but there is not any actual proof of dodging the draft, given the system in place at the time.

I don’t think Hillary nor any of the candidates running have served in the military. Trump is the closest - he went to a military high school. That is where he messed up his leg and was disqualified from serving.

You don’t have to serve in the military to be our president. McCain deserved disrespect as he was disrespectful. I hope he loses his attempt at re-election this time.

How do you know Trump intentionally did not serve?

Have you seen his medical records?

Do you think every person who has gotten a deferment did so to
intentionally not serve?

What seems odd to me is that he didn't have his bone spurs treated once they started bothering him.

I've never had bone spurs, but I had a bout of plantar fasciitis and I went to the Doc right away.

And I'm sure Donald had much better insurance than I had.
