On Monday, NASA revealed a project as part of its newly-introduced New Aviation Horizons initiative that awarded Lockheed Martin a $20 million contract over the next 17 months to create a jet that uses quiet supersonic technology (QueSST). It is the first in a series of X-planes for the initiative.
NASA said it conducted studies across the country to learn more about acceptable sound levels. The finished product will fly at supersonic speeds, and create a "heartbeat" in place of the disruptive "boom" that is currently associated with supersonic flight.

Why are taxpayer dollars being used on this? There are plenty of non-govt outfits which have this ability, if it’s a viable technology.

The problem isn’t the sexy shape, it’s where to put all the fuel. Sucker ends up being gigantic, and the size/weight ratio quickly reaches the point of no return.

Good point. Maybe private companies have already looked at the Concorde business model and realized that it isn’t viable.

There already are two business jets being planned that are Mach 2+
They advertise in the magazine Business Jet Traveler.
I’d look them up now, but my BJT copies are in my library at home.

Wasn’t the Concorde very expensive to operate, resulting in very high air fares, and didn’t they find there just wasn’t a lucrative market of people willing to spend big bucks to save a few hours on a trans Atlantic flight???

No waiting for allah fubars! Now mohamicide buildings in less time than it takes to strap bombs to children!
Aren't you glad conGrease didn't impeach him for violating the 1st amendment when he gutted NASA to "respect" the slime religion?
