LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian Chris Rock launched his return stint as Oscar host on Sunday by immediately and unabashedly confronting the racially charged elephant in the room - the furor over the all-white field of performers nominated for Hollywood's highest honors.
In an opening monologue peppered with biting commentary about what he described as "sorority"-style discrimination pervading the film industry, Rock set the stage for a night of running gags that repeatedly returned to themes of racial politics.
In doing so, he transformed a glittering awards show long known for self-reverential pomp into a 3 1/2-hour live ABC telecast punctuated by withering satire riffing on issues of inclusion and diversity raised by the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite social media campaign and the Black Lives Matter movement.
But the issue of race was just one element that made the 88th edition of the Academy Awards likely to go down as one of the most socially conscious shows in Oscar history. Messages ranged from Vice President Joe Biden's special appearance urging a stand against sexual violence on college campuses to best actor winner Leonardo DiCaprio's impassioned appeal to take care of the planet.
The difference in tone was evident from the start. Strolling on stage in a white dinner jacket and bow tie, Rock welcomed the audience to a show "otherwise known as the white People's Choice awards," adding, "You realize if they nominated hosts, I wouldn't even get this job."

Hmm, guess I missed it....
I dream of the day when Oscars are based on the color of skin, not the content of production.
Until we see Steve Buscemi hosting the BET awards, they can just shut the hell up and try to make GOOD films if they want nominations.
Dangit,, I missed it,,,,,/s
Lets have affirmative action for the Oscars.
Want’s it both ways.
I will not assimilate!
You must embrace my culture into the mainstream!
How does that work?
From the New York Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/29/movies/chris-rock-oscars-review.html?ref=movies
Rock, who was hired before the diversity flap began, emcee the ceremony “was a lucky pairing of host and subject.” His performance was “evenhanded without being wishy-washy” and represented “an example of something the industry is still trying to learn: that you can achieve both inclusion and entertainment by giving the right person just the right opportunity.”
We learned that blacks are the only minorities in the world.
What did they think would happen?
My Asian sister in law actually found this funny ( Dunno why some Asians would take offense in twitter ):
Rock introduced “accountants from the firm PricewaterhouseCoopers” who turned out to be Asian chidren — a not-so-subtle play on stereotypes about Asian people’s math abilities.
But Rock took it a step further: “If anybody’s upset about that joke, just tweet about it on your phone, which was also made by these kids.”
Glad I missed it.
I purposely skipped it (I usually like it) because I knew from the reports of blacks calling the Oscars “racist” etc. saying there “weren’t enough blacks involved”, that Chris Rock would turn it into a Black vs. White circus, all of this brought to us of course by our Enemy in Chief who fans the flames of dysfunction in the Black Community.
Sick and tired of this stupidity. Can’t wait until the Enemy in Chief is gone.
I read that the ratings for the telecast bite.
Does this mean there will be “Participation Oscars” for all those blacks who weren’t GOOD ENOUGH ACTORS to be nominated?
Oh for the days when people like Sidney Poitier won because they really were good actors and not because they were black.
RE: Sick and tired of this stupidity. Cant wait until the Enemy in Chief is gone.

Well, a standing ovation went to Vice President Joe Biden, who addressed the issue of sexual abuse on college campuses. “Let’s change the culture,”.
Glad that Hollywood was finally exposed as a deeply racist group of white people. Wonder how many belong to the KKK?
Joe’s famous line....”put y’all back in chains”
I never watch the oscars. Nothing but entertainers giving other entertainers awards for entertaining.
