Spare me. Apple to me is taking this too far. The FBI is looking for help with a specific phone tied to a specific crime. Last I checked, that was consistent with the Constitution which requires probable cause for a search warrant. I think there is more than such here.

The problem is that, by providing the decryption algorithm to the FBI, Apple opens up the possibility of hacking YOUR iphone WITHOUT probable cause.

I don’t like this.

I was just reading about this on Karl Deninger's Market Ticker blog Here's part of his explanation of what the FBI is asking for:

So the FBI wants a custom firmware load that will allow:
Any number of password attempts. No "10 wrong and you're done" auto-wipe.
Any means of entering them. No "must key them on the screen."
This then means the FBI can attempt to "brute force" the password using a computer over the USB interface and, they demanded, any other means such as Wifi, cellular or Bluetooth!
The latter would mean that for the future they would not even have to physically posses the device. That's right -- they could hack it any time they wanted, from anywhere, at any time.

FWIW, that is his explanation of the scope of the request. If it's true, the request seems prospectively broad.

Right! if it was your kid it might help, you’d say no, don’t do it, the law is more important.

Apple themselves can’t crack iOS 8 or beyond. I also don’t think Trump is being fascist about it. The phone did belong to a known terrorist and killer.

Still, I’m glad Apple has done such a good job with security. Because our phones have become so much more personal, it’s important.

You cannot create a backdoor, just for government with a valid warrant. If a backdoor exists, it can/will be used, exploited by anyone with mal intent.

I doubt very much that the federal government really needs Apples assistance with this. They have people that can do this. They just want to show us that Apple is under the government thumb just like yahoo and Google are.

That may be how the FBI is couching it, but that's not true. They are asking for a method of breaking the encryption that could them be used on any phone.

Who is the subject of the search warrant? The terrorists. It is their phone. Apple has neither ownership nor access. What the government wants to do is compel Apple, against their will, to help in the investigation by divining a backdoor to their customers' privacy. This will not stop with the one phone.

Exactly.

Apple is not the "custodian" of the information being sought - they don't have access to the phone nor do they have the data on their servers, nor do they have a way to bypass the encryption, so a search warrant can't really be served on them. The FBI is trying to force Apple as a 3rd party not involved in the crime to CREATE a way to bypass the security.
