Coffee Gurus of FR, please teach me to like coffee!
Posted on 02/15/2016 1:50:51 PM PST by Politicalkiddo
I cannot stand the taste of coffee. I love the smell of it, I love coffee flavored things like coffee ice cream, but I cannot manage to get myself to enjoy it as a beverage. I really want to learn how to like it, though. I enjoy most foods and drinks, but coffee is my next culinary challenge to surmount. Any advice for a coffee novice like myself? I know that the key to liking foods/drinks that you dislike is constant exposure, but I was wondering what is considered "mild" in the coffee world and something from which I can work my way up.

Come now, where’s your sense of culinary adventure? I love beets. I want to learn to like coffee. I like to try new things.

Many times I add Bailey’s to my camp coffee.
REAL Bailey’s but the fake stuff can do in a pinch.

I kind of like tea. In the end I’m not a hot drink guy. When it’s cold I’ll go for some tea, of course I live in the desert south west, so I don’t drink much tea. Learning new stuff is cool, but I often figure taste is OK as is, at 46 I’m very comfortable not liking the stuff I don’t like and not worrying about it.

I never liked it, either. Then my new employer had free coffee, so I went on a mission to learn to drink coffee.
I started with sugar and hazelnut creamer to get it so I could stand it.
I still don’t exactly LIKE coffee, but I can drink it just fine.

I don’t drink Redbull. It makes me sleepy. Just as tea, 5-hour-energy, and caffeinated soda does.

You should see my tea collection. ;) I am just as fanatical about tea as some people are about coffee.
Okay. Let me ask you. My wife and I both like Oolong. Bigelows. In the bags.
I went to Teavana (I know, but its all I knew for getting premium loose tea locally) and paid a lot for a tea ball and loose oolong.
My wife has a proper tea pot and knows about warming it and all that (born in Ontario, which has deeper Brit roots).
Am I just a a low brow? Or am I missing something?

First off, don’t go to Starbucks. The coffee there and most other places is so strong that I can’t drink it. If you do get it down, it will upset your stomach.
When you get this strong coffee, cut it in half with hot water. It is much more enjoyable.

OK if you really want to jump off the deep end go to Starbucks and order my favorite, a black eyed Chai. It tastes great and you will run a marathon right after.

Why not? Caffeine doesnât affect me much if at all. I canât stand not liking something as basic as coffee. Itâs one of my numerous quirks.
You might also point out that you are in Washington state, where (at kleast in the Seattle area) not drinking coffee is akin to not drinking wine in France.
I should have mentioned biscotti or Italian cookies as another treat that complements coffee well. Those Nabisco wafer cookies are good, too.

Seattle? Surely you can find someplace that can make coffee right.

Well, you could always try waking up at 5:00am half way hung over and with a work shift starting at 6:30am. Then the taste of coffee becomes the taste of survival.

I eat onions, garlic, and mushrooms habitually. If there was anythign that would turn me away from this endeavour, bad breath certainly isn’t it.

You would think. I’m just too confused about what to get. The shops are almost always full, so I feel bad about asking questions and holding up the line and settle for tea. :/

It’s an acquired taste.
Try Dunkin Donuts Coffee with cream and sugar added. You might like that better.
To: Politicalkiddo
If you are going to add a bunch of cream and sugar to it, you might as well go straight to what you are after in the first place.

Oh my, yes! Biscoff cookies dipped in black coffee is amazing. Thanks, ten years of business travel! Never would have known about those cookies otherwise.
