Coffee Gurus of FR, please teach me to like coffee!

Posted on 02/15/2016 1:50:51 PM PST by Politicalkiddo

I cannot stand the taste of coffee. I love the smell of it, I love coffee flavored things like coffee ice cream, but I cannot manage to get myself to enjoy it as a beverage. I really want to learn how to like it, though. I enjoy most foods and drinks, but coffee is my next culinary challenge to surmount. Any advice for a coffee novice like myself? I know that the key to liking foods/drinks that you dislike is constant exposure, but I was wondering what is considered "mild" in the coffee world and something from which I can work my way up.

When I was about 6 I asked my mom for a sip of her coffee. She said I wouldn’t like it. I’m 53 now and I’ve still never had a sip.

I have tried it a couple of times with cream and sugar, but I’m not sure I’m trying the right kinds for a newbie like me.

Most stuff like Folgers or Maxwell House is in the majority robusta beans with a small percentage of arabica bean.

Get a good expensive coffee like Illy. Make it about one teaspoon per five ounces of water. Put it in a smaller ceramic cup that will take out the initial heat and hold it in the cup keeping the beverage warm. Sip some.

“You have likely tasted some poor quality coffee.”

That is my suspicion.

It’s an acquired taste. I prefer tea but coffee is simpler.

Get a light roast and try it

I like a little coffee in my cream and sugar. Well stevia now, had to give up the sugar.

I’m not a huge coffee drinker, only during cold weather really, but try it with a couple tablespoons of half and half, along with Sugar In The Raw. If you like Hazelnut, try Hazelnut coffee. Same with French Vanilla. Then, wean yourself off of the secondary flavorings slowly. Coffee has a few pleasant traits, especially in the morning. Just don’t overdo it, a caffeine jag from too much coffee isn’t pleasant, not to me at least. Three cups max, two is best.

>>Why bother. If you don’t like coffee you don’t like coffee. I don’t like coffee, hasn’t negatively impacted my life. Actually when I see how much money and effort coffee fans put into a beverage they just pee out 20 minutes later I think not liking coffee might actually improve my life.<<

I still look askance at people who drink Coke in the AM. I think they are weirdos ;)

to the OP PK — if you don’t like it don’t push it. Try tea or whatever. Mayonnaise makes me throw up and my entire life has been one of ordering “no mayo” and then checking to make sure they don’t screw up.

I drink tea as well. I have one tea that I like that few others do — lapsang souchong

Why not? Caffeine doesn’t affect me much if at all. I can’t stand not liking something as basic as coffee. It’s one of my numerous quirks.

Are you just in it for the caffeine buzz? If so, make coffee milkshakes in a MagicBullet or Ninja using instant coffee, ice cream, yogurt, milk, whatever you like.

Why? You are better off not being hooked on coffee.

Try it with honey.
Try it with milk and sugar.

Good Luck.

I love tea and mayonnaise. ;) Not together, though.

I don’t like coffee, but I drink it occasionally. The way I get through it is those flavored, sweetened creamers. Especially something with toffee.

Get yourself some Hawaiian Kona Peaberry or Jamaican Blue Mountain.

They are a bit pricey...but they are by far the smoothest.

Make it sweet like a Coke, and lighten with Heavy Cream, not milk or Coffee Mate.

Start there....if you still can’t get past it...coffee’s not for you. And that’s OK.
