Coffee Gurus of FR, please teach me to like coffee!

Posted on 02/15/2016 1:50:51 PM PST by Politicalkiddo

I cannot stand the taste of coffee. I love the smell of it, I love coffee flavored things like coffee ice cream, but I cannot manage to get myself to enjoy it as a beverage. I really want to learn how to like it, though. I enjoy most foods and drinks, but coffee is my next culinary challenge to surmount. Any advice for a coffee novice like myself? I know that the key to liking foods/drinks that you dislike is constant exposure, but I was wondering what is considered "mild" in the coffee world and something from which I can work my way up.

I understand

Try easing into it. Just drink it medicinally at first - you know, in the morning.

Not like this!

...a small bit to wake you up...

I like the smell of coffee too, but caffeine makes me jittery and even has caused me to faint. And I can live without it. I like the fact that I don’t “need” caffeine in the morning like some people do. I’d love to have a stimulating hot drink at meetings. I’d like to say “let’s have coffee” without lying, lol. But I don’t and I can’t. That should be my worst problem.

I drink my coffee with cream instead of milk, stevia and a touch of cream liqueur.

LOL, I understand.

I think if you actually go to a good local shop when it is not crazy busy, you might be able to get someone to guide you in your quest for great coffee.

As far as west coast coffee goes, my absolute favorite is Pannikin. However, they are not found outside of SoCal. However, I am sure there are lots of great little out of the way places that can be helpful.

IMHO, almost any good coffee can be a good starter—then add some creme or flavoring—syrup or a sweetener. Key is you don’t want anything bitter/acidic :(

I was traveling—went to a Burger King—only thing in a small town—desperate for caffeine (I don’t drink soda)—I asked if their coffee was fresh brewed—longer it sits on the heating trivet, the more likely it is to go bitter. Well, the employee said she would make fresh for me. I thanked her profusely, but could not drink more than one gulp...it was horrible—and to think that people drink that every morning with their drive-thru breakfast...Ughh

Live in an uninsulated cabin in Nova Scotia, on the water, with outdoor plumbing and a tiny wood stove in February and it’s the only hot drink available.

I like mayonnaise on French Fries

It is really incredibly delicious.

When I was a kid we always used mayonnaise. It was not until after high school that I first saw someone put ketchup on fries, and I was surprised by it.

“WARNING - Not to be taken internally!” - Slings and Arrows

In 12 cup drip percolator pot, fill to 6 cup mark with water.
In filter, put 6 heaping scoops of coffee.
Medium roast works best, just make sure it’s a robust blend.
Found a maxwellhouse ‘medium roast’ that was rather anemic.
Put pinch of salt in filter, about as much as it would take to cover the surface of a dime with one even layer.
This keeps the coffee from tasting burned too quickly, it doesn’t age well brewed this way.

Brew, recirculate if need be, usually not.
Add sugar and dairy creamer.
Creamora and coffeemate are not recommended unless you like the heart racing that Ranger Pudding gives.
That, and the nondairy creamer will give you both a headache and a buzz with the coffee.

I’ve heard that mayo and fries is a European thing. Never tried it myself, although I have tried ranch.
