Hey Freepers!
What are your cough remedies?
I've had a persistent and overwhelming cough since December.
I've been to multiple doctors, been on anti biotics, had all kinds of cough syrups and drops. Nothing seems to stop it.
Anyone have a home remedy? Thanks in advance!
“Stop taking lisinopril.”
Yep. Worked for me after coughing for six months straight. The doctor didn’t have a clue, but the nurse in his office knew all about what it does.
I still say a doc should be slow to order any X-ray! Your chances of cancer go up with every X-ray. You cannot rule out pneumonia without an X-ray, however. But if the doc strongly suspects pneumonia, he can go ahead and treat it without an X-ray. An embolism is an emergency condition. This was probably in an ER?
DH had this problem, mostly at night. Seemed it might have been connected with reflux. Now we eat dinner early — before 5:00 — and nothing else before bed. (We’re retired; we have the luxury of early dinner.) He’s much better.
Might try OTC Famotidine 20mg, too; it works for my reflux.
My BIL had a bad cough so tried the method that was being emailed all over God’s Green Earth about 10 years ago, and that helped. Vicks on the bottom of your feet, then white socks. Weird, but my sister swears it worked for him.

One of its side effects is a chronic cough

but if you don't take it that is ruled out but the linked page has other causes.
Is the cough productive? (do you get some sputum back, or is it dry with nothing produced)?
Do you have any nasal or sinus drainage?
When you cough, does the force of the cough seem to be concentrated deep in your chest, near the top of your chest, or in your throat?
Does that change from cough to cough?
Do your ears feel funny or tickle inside?
Do you have any allergies or history of asthma?
Do you have any difficulty inhaling or exhaling (try a couple of deep breaths, all the way in and all the way out).
When you breathe deeply, try exhaling forcibly and listen/feel for any gurgles, rattles, or wheezing sounds. Did you get any noise? If so what sort of noise and where was it (deep, high in the chest, or up in your throat?)
among all the other possibilities, is your house dry? try improving humidity in your home ( boil water or humidifier ) also can get in tub ( epsom salt good for the added magnesium) or shower few times a day to open passages sinus and bronchial.
I had recent prolonged cough - was allergy like others mentioned. Allergy pill each day helped.
Prayers you get good info and advice to figure it out when you see your doctor.
The X-Ray was. Severe chest pains, shortness of breath and coughing with blood.
ER diagnosed Pneumonia. I was released after 5 hours.
Doctor the next day ordered a CT which revealed the culprit.
Multiple PE.
I hope you feel better soon! Be sure to have everything checked out. Also, curious to know if you have a tickle that makes you want to cough or is the dry cough just persistent on its own? Make sure your lungs are checked thoroughly. If you haven’t had a chest x-ray yet that should be first. Let us know how you are doing!
Go watch Brian’s Song
I have had a sinus infection, which is going on 5 weeks now (almost gone)...so you have my sympathies. Still one of my ear tubes is partially blocked and hearing a little dulled on that side.
One thing to try, if you haven’t already, is to gargle every several hours with warm salt water. Just 4-5 ounces of warm water, stir in plenty of table salt. Should be enough for 2-3 gulps to gargle/swish/spit out. The salt seems to dry out the area on the back of the throat.
Good luck!
Codeine cough syrup worked for me. I was to busy throwing up to cough. Ended up using a cortico steroid inhaler.
The OP may have a mild case of Pertussis aka Whooping cough. Its rare in adults but does exist

We tried one of those air purifiers that produced ozone.
Mrs. Joe's people spent centuries on the plains (Chippewa), my people spent centuries on the water (seafarers and fishermen, farmers in the tidewater).
We both got downright bitchy with the air purifier going.
Edgy.
The feeling you get before a real butt-kicking storm.
We figured out the ozone (harbinger of a coming storm) was the culprit, shut off the machine, aired out the house and returned to normal domestic tranquility.
YMMV!
God bless you! I don’t know how you’re handling the blocked ear. When it happens to me, I just want someone to knock me out. I can’t accomplish anything when I have one.
Elderberry Syrup will take care of the cough.
I apologize for not reading the responses to see if someone already suggested this, but I had a cough like that last year, that I swear felt like I had for months! Then one day I was out with friends and I ate some nachos with a hidden jalapeno pepper in it. I bit the pepper and it was so hot... but at the same time I KNEW right then it had worked a miracle. And it did! After that I went and bought a jar for the frig, and when I get a nagging cough I just put one on a cracker with some cheese, bite right in, and voila.... cured!
They can also triggering coughing fits. So can Mold.
(Just kidding!) But, seriously, a few people I know are experiencing the same thing - a kind of endless cough, lasting much longer than a normal cold (and they've tried all kinds of OTC cough medicines, cough drops - including the strong "Fisherman's Friend" ones, etc.)
Thanks for your comments. I no longer have the sounds of fluid moving around, so that part is good, and unless I am completely alone in a silent environment, I cannot hear echoing sounds of my own heartbeat and blood flow any longer, which was the case a few weeks ago. Possibly my ear tubes are shorter than average, as it seems like I get this situation once every 3-5 years, and it takes awhile to clear up. I think I sort of got used to it after the first week or so. One advantage is that I am less annoyed by my husband’s selection for volume on the TV... HA It is about 90% back to normal, hopefully will be 100% “soon”.
