Race Goes to South Carolina, With No Clear Republican Threat to Trump
The New York Times ^ | FEB. 10, 2016 | TRIP GABRIEL

COLUMBIA, S.C. — With Donald J. Trump’s decisive victory in New Hampshire and no strong runner-up among a pack of also-rans, the Republican race barreled into South Carolina on Wednesday shadowed by a question: whether any alternative candidate can gain enough support to threaten Mr. Trump’s drive to the nomination.

Gov. John Kasich of Ohio, the second-place finisher in New Hampshire with less than half the support of Mr. Trump, arrives in this more conservative Southern state where he has little staff or support. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, resuming an effort here to enlist the Christian right, the key to his victory in Iowa, faces a playing field where evangelical voters are far less monolithic. And former Gov. Jeb Bush, buoyed by outperforming his Florida rival Senator Marco Rubio, has a chance to open more daylight — but it is unclear if it will be enough to inspire establishment-leaning Republicans to coalesce behind him.

Cruz will be burning money even faster, a sign of his intentions if he were by chance be elected POTUS?

Cruz, the man who has no regard for the dollar.

Cruz can do it! It only cost America $2 billion in SuperPAC donations.

Cruz thinks the US dollar is the same as the Canadian dollar.

Vote for me, i paid for you!

Could be. Cruz may have taken himself out of the VP discussion. But if he mends fences after this process, he’s still in great shape for the Supreme Court, where in my opinion is his best fit.

There’s one big threat. If he gets to the convention with the most delegates but not enough to win on first vote. The party may decide that Hillary would be better than Trump and arrange for someone else to be the nominee. Going against the will of the people will doom that nominee and give Hillary a win but I wouldn’t put it past some of the party “leaders”.

If no lower candidates get out we’ll know that’s the plan. They’ll divide up the states so they aren’t competing against each other in any state. Hope that each of them wins one or two states or at least collects enough delegates to stop Trump from a clear win at the convention.

I guess there is one other threat. He may say something stupid/offensive/crude and we all know that will end his campaign.

have the losers generated as much excitement as they have so far this time around?

In 1980, the media got all excited about John B. Anderson's numerous 2nd and 3rd place finishes to Reagan and George the Elder. Anderson took them seriously, and ran 3rd party in fall, grabbing the vote of 7% who didn't like Carter or Reagan.

Yep, as long as 4 or 5 well known republican competitors remain in the race, Trump will just keep on sailing along to victories. The ONLY way for the GOPe to stop him is to get this down to one competitor, and I don’t see that happening.

Poor Teddy Bare! It's really sad that Cruz got Trumped. NOT!

Gingrich was from the neighboring state of Georgia. Teddy is a Canadian from Texas. The only Canadians that South Carolinians like are those that bring their money to play golf at Myrtle Beach. As for Texans, they think more highly of their skunks!

The dogs have a use for Teddy, though!

Excellent analysis!
Especially the point about who one would want in a foxhole. People realize the survival of our nation is at stake in this election, and in that battle we want a strong, bold and you- know-what-kicking leader who is not afraid to do battle with the establishment.

No, but donnie and his mamas Bible routine is right out of a fake preacher scene in some movie. He really needs to put that trick away because anybody that has actually attended church on a semi-regular basis can see right thru it like looking thru crystal, fooling nobody.

Difference in 2012 was a week prior to the SC Primary, the RCP avg had Newt +5 on Romney in SC. Right now, Trump is polling at RCP avg of +16.

Do you really think the polls are that far off?

I am similarly put off by Cruz's televangelist routine and his self-righteous followers that eat it up. I don't care if Cruz can out Jesus Donald Trump. I do not care.

Agreed, it is a two way street. I guess it goes back to when I was a wee little lad and mom and grandma made us kiddos go to Sunday school followed by church all the way to high school when she must have just given up on us!!!!
