Rubio, Bush, and Christie on Selective Service
ABC Republican Debate | 2/6/2016 | RightFighter

Posted on 02/06/2016 8:59:27 PM PST by RightFighter

Did anyone else notice how badly Rubio, Bush, and Christie mangled the question of women registering for the Selective Service tonight? They all three demonstrated that they apparently don't understand what that means. Either that, or they're all heartless bastards who think that young women should be able to be forced to enter military service and die in combat.

I've skipped some of the non-relevant chatter, but I've done my best to capture each candidate's response to the question.

Radditz: Senator Rubio...should young women be required to sign up for Selective Service in case there's a draft?

Rubio: ...I have no problem whatsoever with people of either gender serving in combat so long as the minimum requirements necessary to do the job are not compromised, but I support that, and obviously now that that is the case, I do believe that Selective Service should be opened up for both men and women in case a draft is ever instituted...

Radditz: Governor Bush, do you believe that young women should sign up for Selective Service, be required to do so?

Bush: I do, and I think that we should not impose any kind of political agenda on the military, if women can meet the minimum requirements for combat service, they oughta have the right to do it...

Radditz: Tell me what you'd say to American people out there who are sitting at home who have daughters and might worry about those answers, who might worry that the draft is reinstituted.

Bush: Why would they worry? Well, the draft is not gonna be reinstituted, but why, if women are accessing..

Radditz: Would you just do away with it?

Bush: No, I didn't say that. You asked a question not about the draft. You asked about registering, and if women are going to be supporting...

Radditz: But you register for the draft.

Bush: We don't have a draft. I'm not suggesting we have a draft...

Christie: Martha, could I be really clear on this, because I am the father of two daughters....if a young woman in this country wants to go and fight to defend her country she should be permitted to do so, and part of that also needs to be a part of a greater effort in this country so there's no reason why young women should be discriminated against from registering in the Selective Service...

"You'd think Rubio, Bush and Christie would be better prepared for a question like that."

They were prepared. Prepared to be politically correct, modern metrosexuals who clutch their pearls when someone says that there are fundamental differences between the sexes and their roles in society.

To too many liberal women, politics begins and ends with two issues: womens’ health care and equal pay. It sometimes seems that it the limits of their beliefs. If we teach young women that there could be a chance that they will need to defend their country, then perhaps they will rethink their priorities and align themselves with the party of the stronger military rather than that of the party that wishes to kill babies and label it a choice. Under a liberal woman president such as Hillary Clinton, I wouldn’t put it past her to have a desire to draft as many males as possible — send them to places unknown — while young women control and dominate corporations and other entities within the US borders. Of course, that may seem far-fetched at this stage but let us remember what America has elected the last two presidential years.

That’s the problem when the majority of these dimwits that we elect have had little contact with the military.

Just to be on the record: I don't believe that women should be allowed in combat positions even if they want to.

I don't care if the only military personnel that get elevated to the highest positions are those that saw combat, and denying women the ability to engage in combat would stifle their military careers.

The military is not a social experiment. It's not supposed to be fair or just. It's just supposed to be able to kick butt.

The default conservative and Republican position used to be NO WOMEN IN COMBAT EVER.

The only time a woman should be allowed in combat is if the enemy comes to us and its house to house. Then it's every man and woman we can get.

Call me a chauvinist, but if we still believe there is some inherent difference between men an women then that should include no women in combat. Period.

The conversation on stage sounded as though everyone had been drinking and attempting to mimic ‘Who’s on first’

I told my wife that the first person to say this wins the debate: “The problem with registering women for the draft is that prime combat age is also prime child bearing age. Woman are free to volunteer but I will not sanction making it mandatory to tear women from their young children. That’s not what it means to be a conservative and to support family values.”

And the winner is......

The crickets on my back porch

Thank you for the post. I wish everyone candidate for president from both major parties were required to answer this question live in front of an audience.

Bush, Rubio, and Christie all disqualified themselves to be president with their answers tonight. Bush showed that in addition to being wrong on policy, he’s too stupid to even understand why people register for the draft.

I would really like to see Hillary answer this question.

I know that my position is not the mainstream Republican position, but here it is.

Yes. Women should be required to register, same as men.

I know the arguments about sending our daughters to war... but I don't think it would be one bit easier to send my son.

Extending this line of thought, while I would certainly support deferments for young mothers, I have to point out that it is also damaging to separate a young child from his father. Separating a mother from her child should be no more abhorrent than separating a father.

The mother is not the only important parent in a child's life.

At this stage of our history and considering technical advancements, a draft would indicate an "all hands on deck!" crisis threatening our very existence.

And if we're not facing that type of emergency, then NO DRAFT for anyone.

they are getting hammered on twitter so their statements were not very good. why do republicans think pushing this idea is a good idea anyway?

some comments I’ve seen on twitter and elsewhere.
“war on women” war mongering bush wants women die to fight another war for oil. Women do not get equal pay or right to abortion but will be forced by republicans to die in another republican/conservative led war. conservatives and men have blood lust for war since little boys & now want to get women involved in their wars men start. get NRA member to fight, they are for violence. the military, right wing are evil etc........

Women and men are not equal. The average man is far superior physically and women bear children.

There is no reason except for big government to have selective service anymore, even for men - the era of big land wars is over.

Your post 31 just exposes the left’s hypocrisy. That is the whole point. They want women to get equal opportunity to every job except this one. Men have paid with their lives for those battle axes to have their freedom. It is time they put up equal blood sacrifice. They think they can spin it into an issue of war mongering. But won’t work. Lame excuse for their double standard.

Men and women are different. But if the law will not recognize it in other areas, the law should be consistent and not recognize it with selective service. Over and over men have stood up and served, loosing their lives or being tragically impaired for life. Let’s have us some equality.

That whiny lady claimed women do not have a right to an abortion. Hello? Roe v. Wade anyone? Women are AWOL on their child bearing task when they abort. They make babies die and men die. Time they put up some blood of their own.

I don't think any of them answered the question. Should the government require women to register for service? That requirement is attached to men.

It's not a question of "allow," women are allowed to enlist. It's a question of compulsion. Should women be compelled to register, and should the need arise, be compelled to serve.

Did I misread what they were saying? Is this the new default position of the GOP, that young women should be required to register for Selective Service and be eligible for a draft? No other candidate on stage went out of his way to contradict what these three said, so it was quite puzzling.

We have a number here on FR who refuse to think and opine that since 'so many women asked for it, they should all be eligible for the draft.

IMO, it a draft is instituted, it means we have a shortage and any "women" so inclined should be able to enlist on their own w/o us helping the Left to erase the differences between the sexes - let the real women alone.

Do they understand that 30% of those serving in combat units did not volunteer to do so?

Not since Vietnam. The Draft ended Jan. 27, 1973.

I DO NOT believe that women should serve in Combat. However, If the Liberals, Feminists and politicians (I know, that's redundant) insist on opening all Combat MOS's to women (Equality!), then women should be required to register for the draft.

If they insist that there is no difference between Men, Women and Its, then ALL must be eligible for the Draft.

If there is a difference between Men & Women, then keep them out of Combat billets and out of the Draft.

Another point: People belonging to groups sexually attracted to each other do not belong together in Combat groups or on ships. IOW, no women or queers. Unit Cohesion does not include "Co-habitation" (in the current, trendy sense of the word, not the literal meaning) or Coitus!
