Donald Trump lost Iowa and perhaps the nomination because he was cheap [vanity]

Posted on 02/02/2016 4:11:20 PM PST by springwater13

Trump clearly had the votes to win Iowa but he didn't put the boots on the ground to get out the vote. Cruz had an epic ground game with 10,000 volunteers, data analytics, SUPER PACS, etc. It's amazing that Trump still came within a few percentage points on a shoestring operation. That's to Trump's credit but he still lost.

The Cruz campaign's pollster said Trump's numbers in the public polls were buoyed by a group of voters who do not typically vote in the caucuses but were strongly attached to Trump. These unlikely regular caucus voters needed a push. Trump did not have the infrastructure.

The depressing thing is if Trump didn't want to self-fund tens of millions of dollars for infrastructure comparable to Cruz, all he really had to do was ask. He could have easily asked for small dollar donations at his website. Asking his supporters to invest in his campaign and still kept his credibility against Super-PACS and special interests/lobbyists. A $20 donation isn't going to influence him.

How did Cruz gain money for that?

I suspect that is why goldman sachs is funding his PACs right now.

He JUST came out and said he likes Rubio and won’t attack him.

He once said the same thing about Cruz.

I’m rooting for Cruz, and glad he won...but this loss in Iowa for Trump only puts him 1 delegate behind the leader.

Its really amazing when you think about it - candidates travel around Iowa for a year, and with their proportional delegate split, nobody leaves with too much of an advantage.

These next few primaries will set the stage...at this point I think its really about who drops out first, and where those supporters migrate to.

Oh please. If he was so ease at winning, he wouldn’t have done that Dr. Carson episode. He knew he had to cheat to win and he was right. He took points from Carson which allowed him to win over Trump. He is quite the snake. I think that was a rotten thing to do but I am sure you think it was smart.

What amazes me is how poorly Santorum did, considering he won the last time...Iowa voters can be fickle.

He never would have won had he not lied about Dr. Carson.

Cruz didn't lie about Carson. Yet you did just lie about Cruz. Funny how you try to apply a standard to Cruz which you yourself don't follow.

I am listening to Carson right now and Cruz certainly did. I trust Carson more then you for God's sake.

Cruz said he didn’t know about it but his campaign put out the news release with his letterhead and signature. Sorry he knew.

Here’s the thing. Trump had to know his best shot at winning the nomination was winning Iowa and then running the table and he didn’t do the investments necessary to turn out low propensity voters. 5,000 voters made the difference. That’s a small Trump crowd in much of the country. Who knows what difference a few more offices around the state, a few dozen more staff, some more TV ads could have made. He was cheap and he probably knows it.

Now, it gets to be a messy 3 person race. Rubio will quickly consolidate the establishment lane. Cruz will get the hard right evangelical lane, and Trump the populist lane.

Trump skipping the debate created a vacuum that allowed Rubio to shine. It was a gamble but would it have been any better if Trump showed up? I doubt it. Maybe it would have been worse. The debate would have been an ambush with video montages, muslim trump haters asking questions, etc. Any of his interactions with Megyn Kelly would have been psychoanalyzed for sexism by the media. Any statement made out into a gaffe. It could have created a whole weekend of drama before the Iowa caucus. Instead Cruz got hammered. But it did create a vacuum for Rubio that wouldn’t otherwise have been there.

Skipping the debate could end up being the trigger that gives us Rubio as our nominee. Funny how life works out.

Today Trump also said that he ran a strong second to Cruz and that Rubio was considerably further back in third.

Odd thing to say. Thought he would be better than that at math.

Do you have a link? What exactly did Cruz say? Didn’t know about what?

I agree. But I still think that Cruz is getting kids gloves overall. For example, why hasn't the media ask Cruz about his work on Bush's Amnesty Bill? That seems very unfair to me. Cruz acts like he is clean but he isn't any better then anyone else. The reason that some think he is clean is because the media hasn't asked the tough questions or held any investigation into his past records and work. That to me is so unfair. And if Hillary brings it up, Cruz will say so what and that works in a General. That is my problem with Cruz and the easy treatment he gets. Sure Trump calls him an anchor baby...big deal. That is not harsh treatment at all.

I saw it on O’Reilly but this is just as good. I just googled it.
