Helicopter Money Arrives: Switzerland Referendum to Hand Out $2500 Monthly To All Citizens

With Citi's chief economist proclaiming "only helicopter money can save the world now," and the Bank of England pre-empting paradropping money concerns, it appears that Australia's largest investment bank's forecast that money-drops were 12-18 months away was too conservative. While The Finns consider a "basic monthly income" for the entire population, Swiss residents are to vote on a countrywide referendum about a radical plan to pay every single adult a guaranteed income of around $2500 per month, with authorities insisting that people will still want to find a job.

I used to work for a large Swiss company. They were on the whole very arrogant and self-righteous, I never thought they were stupid. Apparently I was wrong.

Sure people will still want to work. I guess one way of looking at it is the gov’t can save money by cutting out highly paid employees and their pensions that dole out benefits like they do here.

A couple with no kids would get $60k a year, but they insist that that couple would still want to work instead of play!?

Might be true, but only after Switzerland goes bankrupt. This is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard. Hell...even Bernie might not go with this one.

See what we could have if like them we had no military or space programs sucking up all the people’s money? How big would our guaranteed income be? How soon would the price of everything rise to meet the new normal? When would the government have to step in to control the prices? How soon could the Treasury take back all $1 bills and issue $1,000,000,000 bills in their place? How many shopping carts will it take to bring the money to the grocery store just to buy one loaf of bread - if there is any?

The Swiss have wisely voted this down before and may well do so again.

Right. Why don’t they just vote on a referendum to eliminate all wages and salary and just distribute the same amount of money to each person? In fact, why not just vote to eliminate money altogether? Certainly, people who can bake bread will do so and bring it to the store for distribution out of the goodness of their hearts, while those who can pave driveways will go around installing new driveways for people because it is the right thing to do. From each according to his means to each according to his needs has always worked SO well!

If that is $30,000 a year after taxes then why would anyone get a job? That works out to $14.42 an hour (2080/hrs a year) for each person. 2 parents x $2,500k a month + 4 kids x $750 each a month. 2 adults and 4 kids = $60k + $36k = $96,000 a year. Just who would be taxed as no one would bother with a job?
