Ted Cruz's plan to "bring jobs back from China" is better than Trump's
In the last GOP debate, Ted Cruz outlined his trade policies and how they would be superior to Donald Trump's.
First, Trump's plan is to impose tariffs of 45% on Chinese goods if they don't open up their markets. Trump has denied this 45% figure, and he would also probably deny this audio of his own voice saying, in fact, "the tax should be 45%".
Here's the positive scenario: if China buckled to trade pressures, and opens up its market, the tax/tariff would not be imposed, and more jobs would be created in America. But if instead China refused to open its market, and responded with tariffs of its own, our own exports ($120 billion dollars) to China would be hurt and Americans who work on export markets would lose their jobs. Furthermore with a 45% tariff all the goods coming into America would become 45% more expensive.
Imagine if your car, your furniture, your clothing, your electronics, all cost 45% more. For a billionaire with "New York values" and an income to match, that's nothing. But for the struggling middle class and working poor, their buying power will be substantially reduced. They will be impoverished. So this is a tremendously risky course of action that could have tremendously negative effects on our economy.
Ted Cruz's plan, by contrast, would eliminate the business tax on goods produced for export. As Cruz said:
Today, the U.S. taxes American producers that export goods, but it imposes no burden on imports. My business tax is border-adjusted, so exports are free of tax and imports pay the same business-flat-tax rate as U.S.-produced goods. By shifting to a territorial tax system that doesn't tax income earned overseas twice, my plan will reverse the incentive for U.S. companies to relocate overseas. Instead, businesses will be relocating to America.
The advantages of this plan are fourfold.
First, American exports to China would no longer have to pay tax, making them tremendously more competitive to sell in China. Remember that taxation is a cost, like the costs of goods or labor, and if you reduce the cost of producing goods, they can be sold less expensively. That will make American goods more competitive in China.
Secondly, it will generally become more advantageous for companies to produce goods in America than abroad, given the tax advantages. This tax change will "bring jobs back to America".
Thirdly, this plan will create jobs without sparking a trade war. Since this plan will not pressure the Chinese to do anything, they will have no grounds to start a tariff war with us that could cost thousands of American jobs.
And lastly, this plan does not create the possibility that the most basic consumer goods will go up in cost a whopping 45%. This plan creates jobs while protecting the purchasing power of less wealthy consumers.
Given that, I believe that Cruz's trade plan is superior to Donald Trump's.
don-o, you said: “When people are banned for sharing how they intend to vote, this place will have lost its attraction for me. I lack the words to express how sad that makes me to consider. Feels like, I dunno...death.”
I, too, am exceedingly sad to see Freepers who have been here for years, zotted merely for how they are going to vote. It makes me feel sick.
Well Finny, there is a nightly FR Caucus thread running now, and since it began five days ago, Trump's been in the lead, with Cruz a close second.
Hundreds of Freepers have voted in it each day, so it's a very good representation of what percentage of our community supports which candidate. It's certainly as solid as any poll conducted out in the wild.

That's documented information you're free to look at, if you choose.
My count is cumulative - not hundreds, but more than 1,000 individuals -- over time and represents a lot more individuals than one of those caucuses. In truth, any daily caucus on FR is liable to misrepresent the prevailing long-term opinion on FR. Regarding Trump, THAT prevailing opinion is that Trump is at best a second choice, if any choice at all; in the past week, I have come across several individuals who say, "Well, Trump WAS my second choice, but not any more; now Cruz is my ONLY choice."
My count is cumulative - not hundreds, but more than 1,000 individuals -- over time and represents a lot more individuals than one of those caucuses.
Fine. You're right. The Caucus is wrong.
Vote for who you want, Finny. I'm at peace with my choice.
C'mon Windy. You're better than that. I think Finny has compiled based off comments from the threads. Different methodology.
A little detail would be interesting.
HARD NUMBERS tell the truth, Windy, not the few hundred FReepers who happen to catch that day's caucus (I have participated in at most three, more probably two, out of ... how many, Windy????), but the kind of FReepers who represent the more common conservative, folks who read more and blab only every once in awhile.
THEY are the ones you RARELY see on the Daily Caucuses; the ones you do see are mostly hard-core FReepers whose opinions I have already tallied.
I do NOT make this tally for the purpose of confirming my own opinion. I make this tally in order to discern as big and as true a picture as I can.
Don, I'm not trying to be uncivil. I'm just done arguing about it. As I've told Finny numerous times that I'm at peace with my choice of nominee.
The only reason I spoke at all, is because she included me in her ping. I'm perfectly fine with others choosing who they will.
MOST of the time, I add a name to a list when an opinion is CLEARLY stated; if it is implied, I will go in-forum and back-read posts until I can find a post confirming one position or the other; if I cannot confirm it to my satisfaction, the name stays OFF either list.
WINDFLIER, because I am so aware of my own bias, I require LESS evidence to put someone on the Trump list than on the non-Trump list, so if anything, the Trump 1st numbers are the inflated ones.
INTERESTINGLY, three FReepers who, in forum, come across consistently, day after day, as very much Trump First -- actually prefer Cruz, so those three names were on the Trump list for awhile (and would still be there if I hadn't decided to take them at their word that they are for Cruz first).
Likewise, there have been a few instances where I had to take a name off the other list (not really pro Cruz as much as Trump 2nd, although the vast majority on that list name Cruz as their first pick) because while the tone and frequency of their posts implied preference for Cruz, in fact when asked they stated their first choice as Trump.
That's my methodology and it is the ONLY way that I can satisfy my goal of knowing where most people ACTUALLY stand, as opposed to where fewer people who post more frequently and aggressively, stand.
People can believe me or not as they choose. They have no way of knowing how truthful I am being, but I DO. It is why I post my tally results with confidence.
Ping to posts 62 - 68.
It’s not worth fighting for Finny. He made his choice to support a liberal. So be it.
Excellent post, my friend.
It is what it is. My principles will stay the same.
There's a reason for that, aside from Finny's findings.
There's a reason for that ...
Yep, there sure is, and it DISTORTS the real picture drastically. That is why I keep the tally I do. A distorted picture can only deceive, including those who want to be deceived. I want a true picture and the only way to get it is to get it myself. In doing it, I realized just how far OFF the "daily caucuses" really are.
What are you suggesting, Cat?
Just for clarification Finny, I’m fully in and have been in Cruz’s court. That is not going to change as I think you know , and why it won’t move.
Thank you for explaining how you’re keeping track in regards to this race. I haven’t always voted on the caucus thread and once it wouldn’t count because I mistakenly responded to a poster not realizing it was the caucus thread. So it cancelled out my vote according to the rules.
Plus I work an incredible flexible shift so it’e easy to forget if I voted after midnight or before and the day. It gets confusing.
You’re still here? Thought you’d be on your new forum. You love trashing this one so much and all.
Thanks, caww.
Been searching for Catherine and wondering where she disappeared to and finally came upon this thread which explains everything.......
Congratulations ASSHOLE TWINK, you just chased off a long time favorite poster who finally had it with your shit...........
You're the one who should be gone...........
Over here, post #76
I see what you mean...
Hope she will come back...
