Cincinnati Bengals - Most Epic Choke of All Time
Self | Self

Posted on 01/09/2016 9:13:20 PM PST by mmichaels1970

Bengals intercept a pass to seal the game. Promptly fumble it back to the Steelers. Then commit 30 yards of penalties in the final seconds to allow Pittsburgh the game-winning chip shot field goal.

I’ll say that three people should be gone immediately, Lewis, this 55 guy and Pacman Jones.

If I were the Bengals owner, I would have been on the phone with Tom Coughlin immediately after the game and asked him if he would be interested in being head coach and unofficially offer him the job right then and there.

This team has the talent to be a Super Bowl team, but obviously lacks the discipline to get there as we all witnessed tonight. Coughlin would be a perfect fit - he has the Super Bowl champion pedigree and would instill discipline immediately and will not put up with the antics of Burfict and Jones.

I’m not too sure about that, and I have no horse in the race.

Where was Sam Wyche to admonish the Cincinnati fans by reminding them that they don’t live in Cleveland?

I first started enjoying football with the Belichik/Brady style of understanding that rule book and using it to their advantage. Now, I like it for the absurdity.

You can't take the "thug" out of some of these players. The Bengals were handed the game, except that a few thugs couldn't hold back and control themselves for one final minute.

It speaks volumes about the coaching.

Cincy players are thugs and need to be banned from the game, that will stop that classless behavior once and for all. That headshot on the incomplete pass was a disgusting and criminal cheap shot. I don’t care how good a player is throw in that trash out. Marvin Lewis too! He gives that trash tacit approval.

The rules have changed.

ARTICLE 8. INITIATING CONTACT WITH THE CROWN OF THE HELMET
It is a foul if a runner or tackler initiates forcible contact by delivering a blow with the top/crown of his helmet against an opponent when both players are clearly outside the tackle box (an area extending from tackle to tackle and from three yards beyond the line of scrimmage to the offensive team's end line).

Whether he's a defenseless receiver or a runner is irrelevant now. Current NFL rules call this an illegal hit.

Glad you found the thread!!! I watched the entire game. The comments in the papers are going to be great. Wonder if Jim’s fish market guy is going to be ballistic!

BTW I noticed the same things you did at the end. Ben was forced off the field and Harrison had to put his helmet on. You could see him getting orders from people off camera.

Then there was the stuff being thrown on the field even before the game ended! Cincy had no class and deserved to lose!

Choke is not te right word. The Bengals looked like a bunch of thugs. And then when they get caught, they freak out.

I did not want the Steelers winning. But I was laughing by the end of the game. What a sh!t show.

The Bengal took a shot at one of the Steelers—over the head of one of the refs. It was hard to see. I saw it later from a different angle.

Stupid move by immature, undisciplined players. That crap doesn’t just happen. A good coach and GM would have been fining that crap all year.

They could be the most talented players in the league. But if they act like fools, they will always lose.

Here is my take for what it’s worth. I wanted to see two good games yesterday, just wanted to watch two good games. I saw a Texas team that should not have been in the game, and the big goose egg when the final whistle blew made my point.

I was then hoping for one good game, and I got a major cluster arrangement, not real good football, fans that threw stuff at an injured player being carted off the field. I saw a coach that should have removed a volatile player before the 3rd quarter and stupid juvenile coaches and players all the way through.

Because I am a sunny optimist, I am hoping for two good games today.

Having the perspective of someone who, years ago, did follow professional football as a "fan," but who no longer does, I would suggest that you will be seeing more and more of this sort of thing. While the athletic talent of the players may, overall, be better than it ever has been, the number of ill-disciplined, utterly self-absorbed, and (not to put too fine a point on it) low-IQ players that are to found on professional rosters is increasing. At the same time, the coaches themselves seem to be exhibiting these same characteristics.

Ironically, it may well be that the NFL itself has never been more popular. But, to my eye, the actual product on the field has been deteriorating for some time now. Players, coaches, front office management, ownership, you name it: like so much else in our popular culture, the rot has set in.

The NFL has gone the way of the NBA. Low IQ gangsta thugs with a little talent. Happy to see the Bengals lose! Idiots.

Harry Caray always said about baseball players, “they get paid millions to play a kids game”; I like the Bengals generally, not a favorite team and they’ve got the monkey on their back of always losing in the post season over these past 5 years or less but I think that was some real misconduct.

I don’t fully agree with that, Pilgrim’s Progress. McCarron threw some very poor passes, receivers didn’t catch balls they should have, and McCarron also made some bad choices that contributed to turnovers. Pacman Jones needed to be off the field as well. I will agree that the Bengals have some talented players, and there were some good things some of the good guys did. But overall, that was a TEAM loss, with McCarron, Burfict and Jones the primary contributors to that loss. That game was lost not by the officials, but by a quarterback who is mediocre at best (inexperienced, I know...he needs some time to learn), and 2 hotheads who shouldn’t even be playing.

Completely agree, MM. Personally, I think Burfict should be banned for life, and if I owned the Bengals, I would fire Lewis and release Jones, and concur fully if the NFL banned Burfict. If they didn’t ban him, I would release him, too. The 3 previous $20K fines the NFL has slapped Burfict with for unnecessary roughness are pocket change to a guy making $4.7M a year.

But to give the Bengals credit where ‘tis due, they scored 16 unanswered points in the 4th quarter before the Steeler’s field goal. That said, Cinncinnati deserved that loss, and I’m glad they did. As a New England fan, I have no love for the Steelers. But no way, no how, should dirty play of that caliber be rewarded. Why do you think Brandon Browner is no longer a Patriot?

He may have led with his shoulder, TT, but look up the rules for defenseless receiver:

“A receiver who is clearly tracking the football and is in a defenseless posture will receive defenseless player protections. It will be a foul to hit this player forcibly in the head or neck area, or use the crown or hairline parts of the helmet.”

Brown was defenseless, and Burfict is dirty and should be banned.
