The author of the Game of Thrones series, George RR Martin, has confirmed he missed the last deadline that would have allowed the sixth novel in his fantasy series to be published before the next TV series begins.
The failure to meet the 31 December deadline will mean the sixth season of HBO's Game of Thrones series will appear on screen before its source material.
Martin has been working closely with HBO writers and producers to help the series mirror the books, but the next season is due to start in early 2016 and Martin's sixth book, the Winds of Winter, will not be ready.
Announcing an update on the progress of his book on his blog early on Saturday, Martin prefacing his announcement with the words "you won't like it". He wrote: "For months now I have wanted nothing so much as to be able to say, 'I have completed and delivered The Winds of Winter' on or before the last day of 2015. But the book's not done.
"Nor is it likely to be finished tomorrow, or next week. Yes, there's a lot written. Hundreds of pages. Dozens of chapters. But there's also a lot still left to write. I am months away still ... and that's if the writing goes well. (Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't.)

If he was actually a writer of quality, this development would be met with praise instead of derision.
I guess he needs to see the movie to find out how the book turns out.
If he was a “writer of quality” he would not have been eviscerated in South Park.....:0)
Hack writer can’t hack it.
My Dad was a writer of some note and I grew up with the cloud of missing deadlines over our heads. It is a definite NO NO. But it happens. He is not a hack writer. GEEZ.
The people running the series are doing a better job with Game of Thrones than Martin is with his books. So this isn’t too much of a loss. At least with the series, we will have some chance of getting payoffs on some of the plotlines running thru the books.

I read all the books, but watching Game of Boners on TV got boring. Gave it up in 4th season.
Loved what South Park did to GRRM.
I watch it. Not enthralled or anything. Just something to watch. I just don’t get the oohs and ahhhs over it.

Mr. Martin is already a success beyond any definition of wildly successful. He’ll be just fine.
That’s what happens when you tap a 67 year old relatively unhealthy man to write 1500 page books with extremely intricate plots.
If it weren’t for the TV show I think Martin would’ve retired by now and either sold the rights to his books to someone or just stopped altogether. He is practically retired, writing small projects here and there and attending fan events.
It sounds like he hasn’t made any progress at all since the last time he said he can’t stop rewriting it.
My guess is he isn’t going to finish the series.
I’m not going to be watching the show anymore until I’ve read the books.
I liked the books and look forward to the next one. He is a solid writer with great character development and is certainly one of the best currently writing in that genre.
I liked the books and the show, but more and more, they aren’t the same story.
