Someone is trying to scam me

I put some furniture up for sale on Craigslist. Now I have someone texting me from Vermont (I live in Georgia) wanting to buy sight unseen, claiming to be a flight attendant who is away most of the time but will send a pickup agent as soon as we complete the transaction via PayPal. It seems pretty obvious that it's a scam but it must work some percentage of the time because they keep trying it.

They're not really interested in buying your furniture, they're just trying to get your email address so they can spam you!

I was surprised when my son’s buyers showed up with cash and suggested before hand bank transfers but he said no and they were okay with it finally.

One guy showed up with a friend who had picked him up at the airport that was armed but that’s pretty understandable carrying 11K. The other guy showed up with a trailer and I would guess he was too, didn’t seem like a fool and carrying 12.5K.

I’m sure they checked my son out pretty carefully before showing up. Car collectors all talk the same language I guess.

I heard of someone who lost an $11,000 piano that way. Didn’t use Ebay. They came and got it, no payment, no record of sale, gone.

Yup, it doesn’t take but a few minutes of conversation to figure out if the guy is on the up and up. Scammers are stupid low lifes.

“Why must it be a scam? If they send you the money, you’ll have the money! Give them a month or something to pick up the furniture.”

I’ve had this happen to me while I tried to sell some dining room furniture.

The guy said he was a Doctor and traveled frequently. Offered to pay my asking price - without LOOKING at my stuff.

They told me they’d send a check for MORE than the amount, but that they trusted ME to cash it and send them the balance.

I played along and took the check to the police station. They merely gave me a high-five and said I lucked out by figuring it out and that there was NOTHING they could do. They weren’t even gonna try to trace the check or anything.

My daughter had this happen with a rental. They sent a check for more and wanted the overage sent back.

I called the company on the check and talked to the accountant. She said it was a real check at a real company with a real account. The scam was a former employee left with all the numbers from the account and had new checks printed up and sent to her. My daughter was supposed to deposit the check, it would clear and months later, when the accountant reconciled the accounts they would find the scam check and go get the money back. Thus, my daughter would be out the several hundred for the overage.

Calling the bank wouldn’t reveal the scam as it was a real account with plenty of money in the bank. Talking to the accountant was the only way to find it.

At least they were out the cost of FeEx. BTW, they don’t use mail as then they are liable for mail fraud, and the post office (i.e. feds) go after them.

I took it to Geek Squad at Best Buy (the contract pays for itself) and they said, “been seeing this one for a month now” & cleaned it out.

So, it's pay the scammer or pay the Geeks? Think maybe it might be a Geek creation, then? I've long suspected that virus programs are created by those who sell the virus protection and cures!

And if they are caught, execution is too good for them.

Watch out for Paypal - I keep getting emails from “them” saying my account is about to be closed unless I contact them right away - I never had a Paypal account - there are groups out there using that title as a scam.....

I had one of these a few years ago. Wanted to buy a camper trailer I had advertised. They texted they would pay an extra $900 on top of the $3600 to ship it to them in Ohio but they were in Alaska at this time. I said sure but money never showed up in my Paypal account. I got a forged Paypal email saying money was received but would not show in my account for 48 hrs because some weird reason (don’t remember reason) but PP guaranteed I would receive $ in 48 hrs. Then the texts started coming saying I needed to get it sent today as they needed it now, it was middle of winter btw..ha ha yea right. So I looked up the phone number and got address, sent the guy a text saying he had better make tracks the FBI was on their way to his house and I listed the half dozen crimes he was guilty of. Never heard from him again LOL.

I thought it was strange they would try and scam such a big item as a camper trailer. Had the same scam before that with gold emerald ring I was selling, that made more sense as it is simple to package and mail.

Call your County District Attorney’s office and report what you believe to be a scam. They may already have info about the very same people.

And .. to be on the safe side, start making a few demands of your own. If the DA says they have nothing, then maybe you can find out from them how to reach a DA’s office in Georgia.

Next .. demand CASH - sent by certified mail. Some banks will handle these transactions. Do not accept a check, and certainly, do not allow them to take the furniture without receiving payment in cash FIRST.

Took the words out of my mouth.

That is a CLASSIC scam.

Oh, sorry, here is an additional "payment" that you didn't ask for.

NO. I DIDN'T.

Now I won't accept your bogus check.

Appear in person, with the money, or no deal.
