I'm watching the TZ marathon on SyFy. The current episode, "A Most Unusual Camera" is from 1960 and looks like it was shot on videotape. Did they do that back then? Looks like a cheesy soap opera.
The JMS book on scriptwriting has a very good but condensed history of early television.
I worked in public TV for about a decade and worked with vintage quad to then modern digital beta and DVC Pro.
10pm eastern...”The Invaders” on now! Agnes Moorehead! A defining moment in television!
Huh? I thought kinescope was filming the TV screen so the medium was only usable once. Of course they could recycle it for its silver or just trash it because it consumed space for something that would never be used again.
Right. I have the three dvd sets of CBS’ “Suspense” tv-series (1949-54), which is comprised of nearly a hundred kinescope episodes, from those “live” seasons. They were believed lost for decades. I also have the two “Mr. Peepers” (1952-55) dvd-sets, also entirely comprised of kinescope prints. The game-show network used to run kinescopes of those panel-shows like “I’ve Got a Secret” and “What’s My Line.”
Unfortunately, a lot of kinescopes eventually got junked, too, rendering the shows “lost” to the ages. Not too many episodes of things like “Meet Millie” or “My Friend Irma” seem to have survived, for example.
If only the Invaders didn’t incinerate when you killed them.
Where I am on the east coast the SyFy marathon is just now beginning (at 10pm). First up, “The Invaders” with Agnus Moorehead as a lady alone in a cabin fighting off tiny alien robots.
O-M-G... you must have ROBBED THE CRADLE ! LOL
It's been on all day and night today, but they broke for some wrestling show and then came back.
That’s my favorite one ! :-)
Oh, I didn’t realize that. I have nearly every episode on the computer anyway.
You can watch any episode anytime you want free online. I think someone linked to a source earlier.
LOL...clever !
I always watch these marathons ! :-)
What about KICK THE CAN?
That one looks VERY different !
They show that one ALL THE TIME; every marathon...which means twice a year !
That’s not funny, unless Shatner is supposed to be a Cruz supporter. :-)
Nope, kinescope WAS reusable and they did just that. :-)
Those were photoshops I found on the Net. I just added the Palin caption. The description for that episode (To Serve Man) was the original.
To me, it looked like film.
And the local shows ( those only shown in certain areas ) are also very much long gone; sadly. :-(
