Hundreds of strangers paid tribute at a Kentucky funeral home to a âhumbleâ survivor of World War IIâs Normandy Invasion whose caregiver had worried that no one would come to his funeral.
Vet Warren McDonough was 91 when he died Saturday. He never married and his only known survivor was a nephew in Florida. The big crowd who attended his wake Thursday night at Rattermanâs Funeral Home in St. Matthews showed up in response to a call from Lena Lyons, who runs a boarding home where McDonough spent his final days.
Lyons told WHAS-TV McDonough deserved to be remembered because of what he did for his country. He was part of the first wave at Omaha Beach and earned a Purple Heart. But he never talked about his wartime experienceâexcept for one time, she said.

I don't question their reticence; I respect it.
Thank You ,Sir.
Thank you and God bless you. Sir.
RIP
My Dad only told funny stories. He wasn’t in the front lines, so I don’t know how much real action he saw himself. I do know that a number of his friends and classmates were killed in action.
My dad was 8th AF in WW2 and has ribbons from all three theaters(Europe, Pacific and America). He talked about but he mostly talked about the house boy he had in North Africa, all the surfing and beer, A-20 pilot training to keep from going to the Pacific and how much food they stole from the Navy on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. I have a picture of him on a camel with the Sphinx in the background.
All his friends were war heroes and they all envied him because he never shot at anyone.
Wish I could’ve gone, too.
This man was living through the worst of the Hell that is war and had the time to give comfort to a brother that was praying out his last breath.
That is true courage.
My father got malaria while he was in North Africa. Usually it's fatal but my dad was a young, strong man and survived.
However, malaria damages the heart and my dad died BEFORE his time.
Bless all who have served our country since its beginning. One more gone from the Greatest Generation. RIP Warrior. God Bless.
Thank you Sir, RIP.
Yes!
Thank you.
Ditto!
Sad we are losing these people, when you compare them to the trash in charge of our country...
Those old people prevented our downfall.
the young millennial wastrels of today will BE our downfall.
Thanks, you said it way better than I could!!
Just to let you know, I’m stealing that one and passing it along.
