The nine-millimeter Carl Gustav M/45 submachine gun occupies a unique place in United States Special Forces history for, during the Vietnam War, it was often chosen over the then troublesome M-16 series by members looking for a reliable, controllable and reasonably accurate weapon at short ranges.

The gun looks cheap but I guess it got the job done.

It is ironic that such a peaceful and neutral country makes really great weapons - especially on the tactical level.

Might not be irony.
May be cause and effect.

And they have, for many years. Shipborne 40 mm anti-aircraft “pom poms” were a market pretty much owned by Bofors and the US bought tons and tons of those. Bofors make some awesomely sophisticated cannons now...there can be no question they are among the top innovators if not flat out the top mfr.

I was in a helicopter company in Vietnam. The grunts we carried around picked up some neat stuff from caches.
The “Swedish K” was the ultimate in nonstandard weaponry. Some pilots carried Thompsons, folding AKs, or even CAR-15s (better than the .38s we were issued).
But whoever slung a Carl Gustav was the king of cool on the flight line.

I had two platoon leaders in Vietnam. One was a true leader and the other was a crazed maniac.
The maniac carried one of these weapons which, IIRC, was called a “grease gun”.
