Can 'The Force Awakens' become the biggest movie ever?
Fox news ^ | Published November 21, 2015

Riding galaxy-sized expectations, the new "Star Wars" movie is already setting records for pre-opening ticket sales, with still a month to go. But does that mean the movie's destined to be the biggest of all time?

Though several signs point in that direction, the outcome isn't guaranteed.

The movie is on track to have the biggest December opening ever, topping "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," which took in $85 million in the U.S. and Canada on its opening weekend in December 2012.

It’s funny when you look back at the cost and quality of things when they first came out like CD Players and DVD Players. Not a lot of people could easily afford them. Now the big flat screens and DVD systems are relatively cheaper than the “big luxury” color tvs of the 70s.

I will probably pirate it.

Will be pleasantly surprised if it doesn’t blow. On one hand GL’s involvement was minor and Disney isn’t known for making garbage, on the other hand, JJ Abrams

I worked at Pacific Stereo in 1980. We got in the first Sony CD players. They cost $1,299. I actually sold a few.

I remember telling my sales peers that there is no reason they should cost more than a couple hundred bucks. By then I’d already been jaded by the industry and realized what it should cost. Heck, we sold laserdisk players for $750 and they used gas tube lasers. I still have one for just that reason.

Actually, It deserves it. After all, you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

I will go see it but it will be with a free pass or in a free preview showing. That will be it. I will not be involved with any of the extracurricular things that accompany this show. I have a ton of Star Wars junk I want to unload.

I get what you are saying but for big, especially outdoor adventure movies you can’t beat the theater screen.

The trick is to go during matinee times and when the movie is near the end of it’s run. Otherwise, you have to put up with the talking, wrapper rattling idiots.

I just sit really close. ;-)

But I have to admit, even though it’s a stupid movie, Avatar was amazing in IMAX 3D. And THAT is the one thing that will get me out of the house. The ONE thing.

I have to admit my son bought all of us tickets for the premier on the 17th. I’m not a big SW fan, but I am looking forward to the fun evening we will have as a family, making memories.

I’m just glad the movie starts at 7 instead of midnight ;)

Here’s how I see it:

The REAL test will be those who see the first showings. What the theater-goers say on their Twitter or their Facebook page, or in emails to their friends will set the trend. If, seconds after they leave the theater, the majority are tweeting “It SUCKS!”....that’ll get passed around faster than the top speed of the Millenium Falcon. Same thing if it’s really good.

I go to the movies with no expectations of the movie being good, just watchable.

I remember learning early on that even if I could afford the early versions of new tech that it’s better to wait. The manufacturers need time to improve the product and “get the bugs out” and the price drops drastically.

Around the late 90s, a friend of mine could only find certain movies on DVD. He finally bought one (forget the price but a couple hundred for a big machine). I waited saw the PS2 and waited longer until the price dropped.

I really don’t feel like I missed out on anything due to the wait.
