As the Republican candidates life story comes under increasing scrutiny, it has become clear that Carson is missing an essential value I learned in the army.
As a private in basic training, I learned the Army Values. We were issued a plastic card, on which they were listed: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. For any inspection, until I left the military as a sergeant, that card was a required item.
The US army still teaches the Army Values to every soldier. Its a cheesy, motivational speaker esque acronym that spells 'LDRSHIP'. But it is also useful for teaching new troops, many of whom enter the military with little direction or understanding of what soldiering requires.
The Army Values can be learned in any walk of life. Even running for the presidency. But one such value, integrity, seems to have escaped one Republican candidate altogether.
Ben Carsons personal story is in question, and rightly so. There was the Popeyes stick up in Baltimore that likely never happened, according to Baltimore police. The snake oil company Carson claimed he never shilled for, despite readily availably video evidence of Carson schilling for snake oil. The brutally violent attacks he committed during his childhood that no one who grew up with him can seem to remember. And, of course, a claim that he was offered a 'scholarship' to the United States Military Academy by General William Westmoreland, but turned it down to go to Yale.
'There is no such thing as being 'offered a full scholarshipâ at West Point,' recalls Frederick Wellman, a West Point alumnus who served for 22 years, obtained a graduate degree from Harvard University and now leads ScoutComms, an agency advocating for veterans. 'You apply. You get in. Meeting a general doesnt get you in.'

the guy says Carson has a Brian Williams problem.. maybe he does maybe he doesn’t but that’s why you need to be on the national stage more than 5 minutes before people vote for you to be President,, He’s a very strange person and I wouldn’t follow him into battle or vote for him to be President
As Dr. Carson is not aligned with the vile and evil denizens of the left (you know, the ones who exploit/abuse children to make cheap/vulgar political statements), I chose to believe him.
I don’t ask in a snarky way but please provide me with some substance of those charges, maybe a link or two. The left DESPISE Carson. No I wouldn’t like any of those things you mentioned and I don’t think Carson would either.
I’m willing to overlook the West Point fooferall as there is so much to dislike about the guy’s positions on the issues. He is clueless. And he seems medicated half the time. Whuz up with that?
Rubio is far worse.

Here is some ammo for your side:
Carson at a Glance
Moral Issues:
Carson agreed with the courts that Kim Davis was wrong for taking a stand on her religious beliefs (A court just found in favor of a muslim truck driver who refused to deliver alcohol based on religious belief- but bakers apparently arenât allowed to object on religious beliefs, nor are county clerks according to Carson) http://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/armstrong-williams-ben-carson-kentucky-clerk
Carson Thinks same sex marriages are just ducky- declaring the ruling the âlaw of the land.â - http://www.newsmax.com/Headline/carson-huckabee-gay-marriage/2015/06/26/id/652379/
Carson apparently thinks abortions are just ducky too- he said that he âwould never advocate itâs illegal for a person to get an abortion.â - http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1992-09-30/news/1992274113_1_abortions-obstetrics-dr
Carson approves of using baby parts from âtissue banksâ âTo not use the tissue that is in a tissue bank, regardless of where it comes from, would be foolish. Why would anybody not do that?â - https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/ben-carson-says-it-is-foolish-not-to-use-already-aborted-babies-tissues-in
Carson apparently refers mothers with fetuses with birth defects to abortion clinics- âhe [Carson] believes in quality medical care, No. 1, and secondly, he believes in people making their own decisions based on facts and information.â - http://www.politico.com/story/2015/08/ben-carson-abortion-stance-121456.html?hp=t3_r
Carson believes abortions for rape are just ducky- âI would hope that they would very quickly avail themselves of the emergency room, and in the emergency room, they have the ability to administer RU-486 and other possibilities before you have a developing fetus.â - http://www.politico.com/story/2015/08/ben-carson-abortion-stance-121456.html?hp=t3_r
Gun Control:
Carson is for banning âAssault Riflesâ http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/05/28/dr-ben-carson-on-gun-rights-some-weapons-probably-not-appropriate-like-tanks/
Carson has stated conservatives need to be open to the idea of compromise on gun control measures - http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/05/28/dr-ben-carson-on-gun-rights-some-weapons-probably-not-appropriate-like-tanks/
Carson has stated that local governments should be allowed to ban guns under certain conditions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NM0lldmplM
Carson thinks guns should only be allowed in certain places:
âI had hoped that my NRA speech this year would clarify my position on the second amendment, which I believe is vital to our freedom. As I stated in that speech, Thomas Hobbes, a 17th-century English philosopher when talking about tyranny in Europe, stated that America would never suffer such tyranny because the people were armed. The point that I clumsily was trying to make on the Beck show was that, we should be looking for ways to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of unstable individuals. It was not a well thought out comment by any stretch of the imagination. All of my writings and in-depth statements clearly state that in no way do I wish to compromise the second amendment. I have subsequently had meaningful discussions with the leadership of the NRA concluded that any law-abiding American should have access to any legal weapon for protection, recreation or whatever other legal purpose they may desire. I am now a lifetime member of the NRA. I realize that some people will never believe that and will not go back and research my writings and statements to satisfy themselves.â - https://www.conservativereview.com/commentary/2015/05/exclusive-ten-questions-with-dr-ben-carson
Energy:
âI donât particularly like the idea of government subsidies for anything because it interferes with the natural free market,â but then Carson continued, âtherefore, I would probably be in favor of taking that $4 billion a year we spend on oil subsidies and using that in new fueling stations.â - http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/opinion/columnists/kathie-obradovich/caucus/2015/05/05/ben-carson-climate-change-renewable-fuel-standard/26945261/
Personal Gain:
âit is naive to count on the honesty and integrity of people responsible for our markets when they stand to gain so much by manipulating the system to their advantage.â (Ben Carson, America the Beautiful, 78-79) -
Taxes:
Carson has stated that heâs for government wage control- http://www.cnbc.com/id/102658083

There is no such thing as being ‘offered a full scholarship’ at West PointThe snake oil company Carson claimed he never shilled for, despite readily availably video evidence of Carson schilling for snake oil.I honestly have not evaluated that claim. However,
is objectively false. Everyone who is accepted at West Point gets a tuition-free education. If you call a tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have? Four - calling a tail a leg does not make it a leg. - A. Lincoln. If you call a tuition-free education something else besides a scholarship, that does not make it not a scholarship.Granted that since Carson did not apply he was never accepted. There is nevertheless only one thing that comes to mind when I hear that,
that he would be given a free ride at West Point, and it is seriously suggested that a reasonable person would not consider that that person had been offered a scholarship:
- during the Vietnam War era,
- General Westmoreland
- told an outstanding HS ROTC student
- who was black
Oh, come on now!
Whatever he has to take to control his mood swings is evidently some strong stuff, judging by his speech and appearance.
What is the Honor in writing a letter like this, conveying unsubstantiated information and widely acknowledged falsehoods? How much Courage exists in making snarky non sequitur comments? Where is the Commitment to quality journalistic and research practices which require truth seeking, and the ability to apply them to print?
This is getting tiresome but I will address each of your concerns.
1. Cruz’s support for an increase in H1B visas. This is designed to keep talented science and engineering students in the U.S. after they graduate. I am pretty sure that Trump has indicated that he wants to keep them here too. This has nothing to do with illegal immigration which Cruz opposes.
2. Sen. Cruz has always opposed birthright citizenship but as a lawyer he doubts that it can be eliminated without a constitutional amendment. As someone with a slight law background I actually agree with him and I am glad that he has the integrity to be honest with us about what it will probably take to end birthright citizenship.
3. Ted Cruz liked the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) Bill because it would make it easier for him to negotiate trade agreements as president. He only voted against the final deal when it became clear that Mitch McConnell and John Boehner had worked out deals with the democrats behind closed doors to renew the corrupt export-import bank. Finally, just to be clear Sen. Cruz does not and has never supported the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement which has now been presented to Congress to be approved or disapproved.
Honestly, I think we should let the Trump supporters post the Carson trashing articles. I don’t know what to believe about some of the other biographical stories but I can totally believe that Ben Carson as an impressionable 17 year old thought he was being offered a scholarship to West Point when they were trying to recruit him.
don’t put your trust into somebody that just came on the national scene 5 minutes ago just because non Conservatives are giving him a hard time,, you really know nothing about him and people are all ready to vote for him to be President?.. not me
Like Steve Jobs it’s an amazing story to watch where Carson came from to where he went in his profession but like Steve Jobs he is a very strange bird who nobody really knows and the more we know the weirder he gets
Carson’s campaign has published the West Point recruiting materials for Carson’s year emphasizing that admitted black students would receive a “full government scholarship.”

HIs stance on illegal immigration: Carson:
'Is it moral for us, for example, to take advantage of cheap labor from illegal immigrants while denying them citizenship? Im sure you can tell from the way I phrased the question that I believe we have taken the moral low road on this issue. Some segments of our economy would virtually collapse without these undocumented workersâwe all know thatâyet we continue to harass and deport many individuals who are simply seeking a better life for themselves and their families.'
Here is a link for the gun control issue.
I also recommend post 48 of this thread.
No problem I’ll check this out. Thanks.
I see your point and no one that wasn’t there will ever know if he actually spoke to General Westmoreland and what was said.
Westmoreland wasn’t in his state when Carson said they met, he was apparently golfing in Washington that day. Westmoreland did go to a 1500 person Banquet in May in Carson’s region. They may have met then since Carson has said he thinks it was at a banquet and someone may have introduced the General to the most promising members of the ROTC. We can certainly conjecture a plausible scenario. Carson may have been wrong about the day, month etc. He may have been wrong about the name of the Psych course where he says he was given an award for most honest student, since there was no course of the name or number taught when he was at the college. Carson may have misremembered that kind of unimportant detail or he may have embellished in all these small incidents that are being reported.
It is obvious that those that want to think well of him will give him the benefit of the doubt and others will be convinced that so many misrememberences show a lack of candor or a glibness. Neither side is wrong since we do not know and may never know the facts no matter how many classmates, teachers, coaches we question.
In the end his trustworthiness will be measured by his consistency on this campaign and by the opinions he espouses.
The writer is a moron.
I get what you are saying and i despise those people as well but Carson comes across as seriously creepy and i just don’t like the guy.
Definitely do not want him as president if i had a choice.
