‘Spectre’ will bore you to death
NY Post ^

A license to kill is also a license to not kill,” M lectures his new boss in the 24th James Bond film, “Spectre.” Well, it’s not a license to bore as much as this bloated drag manages to do.

After a smashing opening sequence with a rooftop chase set against Day of the Dead observances in Mexico City, we’re plunged into a patchy plot (basically the same as the last “Mission: Impossible” outing) that’s little more than an excuse for random homages to the series’ illustrious past — reminding us how utterly mediocre this one is.

“...he is part of the Mission Impossible Force...”

OUCH!!!

“One Star.”

Brutal.

Thank you P-Dogg; you saved me from possibly wasting ~2 hours watching this pukefest.

>> Brosnan was still doing Remington Steele) made him the Bond you just wanted to slap for being a jackass. I complained he was making Bond too silly (the scene of him adjusting his necktie underwater during a boat chase when it momentarily went upside down), and with the next casting, they needed to go with a more serious-minded actor. I have to admit to not seeing those films you cited from Owen’s oeuvre, however your complaints about Owen’s acting skills remain my virtually identical criticisms of Craig. It’s almost like the producers took my complaints about Brosnan and went in the complete opposite direction, a soulless, bored, bitterly cold blonde thug. No charm, no humanity, just a person distantly staring off into space. A thoroughly miserable soul. <<

Agree 100%. I was not happy with Brosnan or Craig as Bond, for OPPOSITE reasons.

Brosnan's Bond was never believable as a real secret agent and his casting was TOO "Hollywood" as the PERFECT unflappable ladies man with chiseled good looks. Brosnan's Bond was always so smug and in-control you wanted to smack him.

The Craig films went 100% in the opposite direction. Suddenly Bond is 100% believable as a ruthless government agent who won't hesitate to kill you in cold blood, but who utterly lacks ANY sort of wit, charm, or grace that are key to the character. A wooden stump would be more compelling in the title role.

Hollywood similarly went 180o degrees with the Batman franchise. We went from George Clooney playing George Clooney in a rubber suit and lacking any sort of gravitas in the role of a borderline psycho who dresses up in a mask to take out criminals... to Christian Bale overacting in the EXTREME to portray Batman as a enraged, growling, out of control manic who spits all his lines out in a throat cancer voice.

Batman Begins and Casino Royale began the "reboot" craze a decade ago and now Hollywood has gotten to the point of needlessly "rebooting" franchises every 3 films, whether they need it or not. It would be a fitting irony if the craptastic "Fan4astic" remake and Specter kill off Hollywood's reboot fetish.

>> Speaking of the Gun barrel sequence, it's finally back at the start of the movie I hear, after inexplicably being at the end in the last 2. <<

It made zero sense to put the gun barrel at the end of the film in the last two Craig movies. At least in Casino Royale, it was his "origin" story about how he became a 00 agent, so incorporating the gun barrel as a lead-in to the credits (rather than have it after the MGM logo) was a cool idea that made sense.

Spectre was so bad that I actually fell asleep while watching the movie.

I finally saw this, Saturday night. Spoiler alert if you haven’t and don’t want to be spoiled

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mu4kFqmv3RM
Honest trailer pretty well nails it

Gun Barrel at the front but it was crappy compared to the Bronson era, looked half-a**ed.

The song was ok but I already don’t remember it. Previous 3 Craig films had good catchy songs.

This was just dull....I don’t know if it’s objectively the worst Bond film but given the choice right now I would watch any other one rather than rematch it. Even QOS which didn’t even feel like a Bond movie. I didn’t really loathe it so much while watching it, it held my interest and was better than watching the Cubs lose but thinking about it after and how much money they spent making it and how little rewatchability it has...

The action was good and I liked Dave Bautista, first notable henchman since that blond German a-hole and his mentor in TND.

The plot was just...asinine, all set in motion by a cryptic video tape left behind by Dench. The attempt to tie it into the previous Craig movies was stupid. If this is Spectre looming over everything then what the hell was “Quantum”, a subsidiary evil organization, the JV league?

Blowsfeld, terrible, give me that creepy young Soros from QOS. What’s the point? It’s twice as dumb as making Benedict Cucumberpatch “Kahn”. So he’s Bond’s quasi-step brother and has it in for him cause he was jealous his daddy liked him better, seriously?

The torture scene was.....”these needles will make you forgot the faces of everyone you know” WTF?

The ending was very stupid, and this Blowsfeld dude is so OCD wacko when it comes to “torturing” Bond (to the point of printing out cut outs of bonds face and sticking them on those target practice sheets) that I question how the hell he was able to found this super powerful organization.

The whole “intelligence” tie-in/subplot and the evil British dude was really stupid. Ralph Finesses disappointed as M. I liked Black Moneypenny in this but since she banged Bond last time there was no sexual tension.

This new Q seems ambiguously gay, but the rest of the movie was so lousy he was actually one of the better parts of it.

The French chick was hot, but had no chemistry with Bond, Olga had more and he didn’t even bang her. And she was underdeveloped to point that it felt weird that they decided that they love each other.

Monica B is sadly over the hill, and her scene with Bond seemed like a rape about to happen right up until she kissed him back. Creepy.

Craig looked bored as hell throughout. Blame the director for that? Oddly enough he’s been in role now for such a period of time that it finally at least feels like I’m watching James Bond.

All in all, lame, if you’re going to the trouble of making a movie, do better than this.

I question the future of the franchise.

That’s the one I haven’t seen, yet. I can’t picture “That’s a Bingo !” guy as Blofeld. Only one person on earth living today can play Blofeld, and that’s Soros, and that’s because he IS Blofeld. Evil to the core.
