Arctic snow not darkening due to soot, dust
Science Daily ^ | October 30, 2015 | Dartmouth College

For millennia, Greenland's ice sheet reflected sunlight back into space, but satellite measurements in recent years suggest the bright surface is darkening, causing solar heat to be absorbed and surface melting to accelerate. Some studies suggest this "dirty ice" or "dark snow" is caused by fallout from fossil fuel pollution and forest fires.

But a new Dartmouth-led study shows that degrading satellite sensors, not soot or dust, are responsible for the apparent decline in reflectivity of inland ice across northern Greenland. The study's results suggest the ice sheet hasn't lost as much reflectivity as previously thought, and that black carbon and dust concentrations haven't increased significantly and are thus not responsible for darkening on the upper ice sheet.

The findings, which contradict anecdotal observations and earlier scientific studies, appear in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

My son, the documentary film director, spend three months on the ice cap, headed to the north pole. A helicopter picked him up in Greenland and dumped him on the ice cap. He said it is nothing but white, everywhere you look. He had a film crew with him, plus a doctor who had been on the ice cap before, and there was a guide who was a snow cap explorer for years.

With nothing but white to see, he said when they were in the helicopter coming back and saw color, it was hard to look at it. Their eyes had to adjust to seeing color again.

No where did he see anything black or gray on the ice cap - it was total white. So, take it from someone who was there for three months, not some satellite who can’t say what it looked like. :o)

.. degrading satellite sensors? How could this be???

Must be due to global warming. Everything else is.

The degradation could possibly be caused by exposure to atomic oxygen which exists at the edge of our atmosphere. It can cause erosion of exposed metal on satellites.

The only reason I know about atomic oxygen erosion on satellites is someone sent me an article about it as a joke when I worked in nuclear engineering as an equipment qualification coordinator for nuclear harsh environments.

The article was interesting but totally useless for nuclear power plants!

Ban volcanic activity now!

When they ban volcanos, only criminals will... ah nevermind.

Even if soot were falling on the Greenland glacier, it would be covered-up regularly with every snowfall.

Oops. Yet another black eye for the warmists. How many will it take?

Typical of leftist “science” as all the facts have to be changed with every revelation of another truth in order to maintain the anti-freedom anti-God agenda.

But a new Dartmouth-led study shows that degrading satellite sensors, not soot or dust, are responsible for the apparent decline in reflectivity of inland ice across northern Greenland.

However, climate scientists quickly noted that the deterioration of the satellite sensors was likely caused by global warming, providing yet another example of the damage caused by CO2 emissions.
