After Groom Got ‘Cold Feet’ And $35k Wedding Canceled, Bride’s Family Hosts Feast For Homeless

After a groom reportedly got cold feet and called off his wedding at the last minute, the jilted bride’s family decided not to cancel the reception at a four-star hotel in Sacramento.

(Credit: KCRA) Instead, they invited the city’s homeless to enjoy the sumptuous meal that had been planned for the post-nuptials celebration.

“When I found out Monday that the wedding would not be taking place, it just seemed like, of course this would be something that we would do to give back,” Kari Duane, the 27-year-old bride’s mother, told KCRA.

The television station reported that some $35,000 was spent in advance on the wedding — including the reservation of a banquet hall at the Citizen Hotel, overlooking the Sacramento skyline.

That’s where scores of strangers — some of whom arrived alone, others with their children or grandparents — were welcomed to dine on a feast of salad, salmon, gnocchi and tri-tip beef.

“I think it’s very generous, actually,” said Erika Craycraft, who partook of the meal. “To lose out on something so important to yourself and then give it to someone else is really giving.”

Rashad Abdullah and his wife, Erika Craycraft, brought their five children to the venue.

“When you’re going through a hard time and struggle, for you to get out to do something different and with your family — it was a really a blessing,” Abdullah said.

The bride chose to stay home while the meal was served.

“I feel a lot of heartache and heartbreak for her,” Duane said. “But I will take something good from this. I will.”

The nonrefundable honeymoon was also paid for in advance, according to KCRA. The would-be wife and her mother were expected to leave for Belize on Sunday.

My guess would be that the original guests would feel awkward about showing up.

Exactly. I can't imagine still attending. It would look like I only cared about the food. "Wedding's cancelled? So what? Let's eat!"

My daughter and sister in law (and me kind of since I paid for it) planned a huge backyard wedding here. About 3 days before daughter told me she wasn’t sure she loved him. I called everyone from his side of the guest list and cancelled........then had a huge party for our side. Lol. We had a B_____ and K____ Almost got Married party.
The food was catered, the cake was made, and the booze was already bought so we figured why not?
Everyone thought it was funnier than heck and had a great time.

thanks for the levity. Others are tearing me apart on this thread for saying this marriage was probably doomed from the start. Probably all mothers who want to remain close to their "little babies."

In this Shakesperean comedy of errors, the groom is a coward, the bride a victim, and the mother a saint. Your review reflects unfavorably on you, not the jilted bride, and not her generous mother.

Mama may have paid for the honeymoon and she chose the daughter to accompany her.

I don't know the specifics of this situation. Then again, neither do you. All we have is this one article, and given today's lack of journalistic standards, there is a lot that we do not know.

Generally speaking however, I am not postulating that one cannot both be married and love and adore their parents. That has nothing to do at all with this particular story in which the jilted bride-to-be decided to take her mother on the honeymoon instead.

Now I try putting myself in that situation. I was married some 30 years ago and I also had a big honeymoon planned. If my wife left me at the altar, I can think of no scenario in which I would go on the honeymoon anyhow. I would feel like the world's biggest loser. Especially if I took my mother with me!

I can just picture myself coming back afterwards. People would ask me "How did the wedding and honeymoon go." And I'd say "Well, ahhh, my bride never showed up for the wedding...but hey, I did go on the honeymoon anyway...and I took my mom with me."

Doesn't everybody see how pathetic that sounds?

Personally I would have been devastated if that happened to me. And I'd be in no mood to go on a trip. Maybe I would let both my parents go - let them have a second honeymoon.

I think about the honeymoon my wife and I did have 30 years ago. A couple days in New York City, seeing shows. A cruise to the Caribbean. Days of sandy beaches, nights of walking together on the beach and romantic dinners, etc. All of this was planned ahead of time by the way. In those days, you have travel agencies book everything as there was no Internet.

I try to substitute my wife with my mother on that trip and...sorry, but it just doesn't work!

It sounds completely pathetic because you are supposed to be a man. A man is supposed to learn to honor and protect the women in his life. It's supposed to be in his cultural DNA.

So taking my mom on a honeymoon is supposed to be protecting her? Sorry if I don’t follow the logic.

Comparing yourself to a woman to channel your feelings to find some excuse to criticize this jilted bride and her gracious mother is lame and pathetic. Stop digging. Apologize. Ask for a do-over.

I think this "extended adolescence" is a reflection of our 50% divorce rate in our society. Both men and woman need to cut the apron strings and grow up. Stop being so fragile and precious.

Not only do men need to "man up" but women need to "women up" as well.

When my son graduated from college and was soon to be married, I was thinking about the timing of cutting ALL those strings, and he went ahead and did it all for me.

Got his own cell phone plan, insurance, bank accounts, you name it.

He took the initiative and did it all on his own.

At 23 years old.

My younger daughter also has been pretty proactive on being on her own. My older one needed a little prompting, but she was in a more difficult financial situation and needed better health ins than obamacare.

Good that she realized that BEFORE tying the knot.

It’s embarrassing, I’m sure, but better than regretting it.

You guys just aren’t getting it. I wouldn’t go on the honeymoon at all if I was jilted on the altar. How can a jilted bride enjoy the honeymoon, no matter who she brings. It just seems so weird to me.

I hear you on that.

I could not enjoy it with the constant reminder of why I was supposed to be there in the first place.

Congrats on well raised kids. My two are in their mid-20s and have been on their own for a while. Many of their peers are still living with their parents. If you think I got beat up on this thread, it was even worse on the threads where I criticized parents for allowing their grown children to continue living with them.

My wife and I came of age in the 1970s and back then, it was considered embarrassing to live with your parents if you were grown up and not in college. My wife (years before I met her) got an apartment and subsisted on boxes of Mac & Cheese and Hamburger Helper for a while. But she was proud to have her own place and become independent at an early age. For myself, I joined the military at age 18 - which I guess is kind of cheating because the U.S. government took care of me for a while. But I didn't go home after my discharge, I lived in ratty apartments for a while until I could afford something better.

This "arrested development" for our young adults can't be a good thing. I think this is why they have trouble emotionally when they run into adversity.

Frankly, I’m glad the bride to be chose her mom to travel with her on what would have been her honeymoon trip. Her Mom has been through a lot with her daughter, dealing with the groom backing out. I’m just glad he did it BEFORE they got married!

$35,000 for a wedding?

That was just the reception after the wedding. Lord only knows how much she paid for her dress, and they paid in advance for the honeymoon!

Cause you're a GUY, Sam. The same doesn't hold for a young woman jilted almost at the altar. And I'm sure the public activities would have been the same regardless of who was on the trip.
