FULL TITLE:
Jennifer Lawrence says she was paid less than her male "American Hustle" co-stars because she "failed as a negotiator" — and she believes that failure may have stemmed from a deeply-ingrained female fear of assertiveness.
According to the Academy Award-winner, who discovered through the 2014 Sony email hacks that she and co-star Amy Adams had made less money than “the lucky people with d---s” (Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner), her mistake was trying to avoid seeming "difficult" or "spoiled" during salary negotiations.
She acknowledged that her inability to negotiate a higher salary could simply be "a young person thing" or "a personality thing" — but "based on the statistics," she suspects other women struggle similarly with Hollywood's gender pay gap.
"Are we socially conditioned to behave this way?" she wrote. "Could there still be a lingering habit of trying to express our opinions in a certain way that doesn't 'offend' or 'scare' men?"
The leaked Sony emails, which surfaced in December, revealed that Lawrence and Adams were each earning 7% of the crime drama's back-end profits, compared to Cooper, Bale, Renner and director David O. Russell's 9%.
But the 25-year-old actress doesn't fault her employer for paying her less than the guys — she blames herself for not speaking up.

She was fantastic in American Hustle.
A very humorous,spot-on,performance.
.
There were 10 or 15 actresses who could have played that role, and some of them better. She was a little too young for it, needed to be a late 30s actress who had seen better days but who still looked ok. There were not many lead actors who would have been big box office draws. The ones who are the best draws currently are the ones they chose.
She also failed to secure her phone photos.
I guess that is a man’s fault too.
I don’t fault her for wanting more but it was her job to get it.
She’s only 25 now, I don’t know the deal with her agent but duh how many “kids” in their early twenties can negotiate multi million dollar deals.
She is in such a star and in so many movies I’m sure she is fabulously wealthy at age 25, even if Christian Bale or somebody made more on a picture.
I have to comment that is such a corrupt industry and stories of the casting couch for both men and women are true, and they can have their careers ruined by rejecting a vengeful producer / director. So she’s lucky if she was protected from all that.
I give her full credit for failing to secure her phone photos. Not that I’ve seen them.
I am just guessing that with her phenomenal stardom, we are going to read an anonymous sourced article quoting an industry executive saying something like: “Uh, Jennifer dear, do you remember you got a higher percentage of the movie net in return for a lower salary figure?” Or conversely, she took a higher up front payout and let the others have a bigger percentage of the gate.
It’s very common for big name actors to get a piece of the ticket action.
Followed by the "But I only watch Gunsmoke videotapes on my black and white."
Some people here think it is a badge of honor to be completely out of touch with modern American culture. It's one thing to not like today's movie and music stars but to be completely clueless as to who they are demonstrates a total disconnect to the world around them that certainly doesn't bode well for conservatism.
And this is why every single actor big enough to negotiate something other than a "take it or leave it" offer from the producers has an agent negotiating their contracts. Most such agents, the good ones, are attorneys with strong tax accounting backgrounds. Same with pro athletes.
Re #27:
Amen.
Renner really didn’t deserve to be in on the top money on that film, and while Christian Bale and Cooper were important, you wouldn’t have had men watching that movie without Amy Adams especially, and J Lawrence.
But I don’t think the director should be compared to the actors. He deserved top dollar.
She still made a bundle on the film.
I don’t think it’s a conservative thing. Especially after a certain age, you begin to realize there are a lot of movies and tv shows (especially now with cable, Netflix, etc) and not everyone makes movies and tv the center of their lives.
I find it hard to watch nothingburgers on Late Night TV or SNL, when I grew up with Carson and the likes of Belushi, Murray, Chase, etc.
Same with sporting events. Yes I watch them but after 60 or so World Series some of us realize hey they are going to keep doing this every year.
Just saying. In my case it’s mostly the endless new tv shows I don’t keep up with. I love movies. But please the modern stars are few and far between. Is Jay Law a legitimate “star”? borderline.
RE: She is in such a star and in so many movies Im sure she is fabulously wealthy at age 25,
She is worth $60 Million today.

Not as rich as Julia Roberts (yet), but hey, Roberts is in her late 40’s.
I think she is a "hoot."
Maybe she should take testosterone shots.
It's not the d**k, it's the balls that make men better negotiators.
Is she related to Martin Lawrence?
Maybe at the time she deserved less due to her lesser experience and track record to draw??
Damn, a Hollwierd figure who takes responsibility for her own shortcomings? I thing I like her!
“Some people here think it is a badge of honor to be completely out of touch with modern American culture”
Given the state of our “American Culture”, do you really think it is a badge of honor to be “completely in touch” with it?
Talk about your "first world" problems...
