A longtime American wardrobe staple is in danger of extinction

Blue jeans are increasingly going out of style, and even industry heavyweights like Levi's and Gap are taking notice.

Teens are now buying more gear from Nike and Lululemon over denim classics from brands like Abercrombie, according to a recent Piper Jaffray survey on teen spending.

Levi's CEO has admitted that the company is threatened by the athleisure trend of wearing yoga pants, Bloomberg reports.

"We’re scrambling," Bloomberg notes CEO Chip Bergh told analysts last year. "I mean, there is a big difference between the product that we’ve got on the floor today and what the consumer is looking for. And we just flat-out missed it."

Bloomberg reports that Levi's, which is the world's most iconic denim company, stuck to its core product instead of adapting to consumer trends.

As a result, this has cost the company. Bloomberg notes sales have dipped from over $7 billion to $4.8 billion over the years.

"As we saw ‘casualization’ continue even further, the customer basically told us that they had enough denim until something really unique and innovative came along,'" NPD analyst Marshal Cohen told Bloomberg. "We really saw the denim industry and denim retailers basically turn their nose up on the customer and say, 'We don’t care what you really want, we’re going to tell you what you want.'"

I’m not sure I’d call myself ‘back’ in shape. Just a lot less out of shape *grin*

Low carbing/paleo is what works for me. The biggest issue I have is sleep deprivation. Wrecks my metabolism at my age. Totally wrecks it. I can lose 5lbs in a week doing nothing but getting 8hrs of sleep every night. Sadly I can’t do that on a regular basis.

I didn’t know what yoga pants were so I googled it.,

Oh that’s what I wear at the gym. Or on laundry day when my pants are being washed,,

Other than the gym, I wouldn’t wear them in public. But then, I hardly wear jeans. I wear preppie pants. Like dockers for women. Jeans on weekends.

I don’t know why you would wear yoga pants for anything other than the gym, but in my Grandmother’s day women dressed up for Broadway shows complete with hats, and of course traveling by train or plane you were dressed to the nines as well.,

Housewives even wore dresses during the day like
Lucy and Mrs.,Cleaver. Those days are long gone.

It’s damn near impossible to find the old fashioned stiff, unwashed, unworn dark blue denims anymore. They ‘pre-stress’ them so they wear out twice as fast.......................

“I can walk into WalMart and buy a pair of Wrangler jeans for under 25 dollars.”

The Wranglers sold at WalMart for that price are not the same quality as the ones sold at Academy or in department stores, typically, between $30 and $35, at least in my experience.

We are actively telling our scouts not to bother with anything made of cotton. It’s useless on the trail, unless its being used as a bandage.

“Wrangler”

From Wal-Mart. They have a whole wall of them at my local WM...from “brand new” dark blue to “pseudo-worn” faded out.

A pair of those and one of WM’s $8.98 sports shirts...and I’m ready to go anywhere but church.

“I switched to Wrangler long ago, they are far better than Levi’s but I am noticing with each passing purchase of them they seem to lass less and less as well.”

My experience, as well.

“Carhartt also has the iconic carpenter shorts and pants that have a leg pocket that fits most cell phones.”

Carhartt also makes durable button-down short-sleeve sports shits which I buy at Academy or the local feed-and-seed store for under $30.

The clothes my father wore in combat in Korea were all cotton.

Levis are a good indication of the inflation rate.
original pair purchased in 1888 cost $1.80 cents.

In 1962 they cost $2.60. not quite double the price in 74 years.

Today they are $49.00 or more depending on the store. Quite a change in just 53 years.
If we still had the inflation rate between 1888 and 1962 they should not cost more than $5.00 a pair today.

I met a guy in Orange County that was head of Marketing and Sales for Levi’s, I told Him this:

I always bought 5 pairs of 501 shrink to fit, all the same size, starting in the 90’s every pair fit differently and they wore out real fast. So Now I buy Wranglers, and EVERY pair fits the same and they last twice as long as the 501’s, and are half the price.

I don’t know why you would wear yoga pants for anything other than the gym ...

The claim is that "they're so comfortable," but if they're so comfortable, why are pantyhose too uncomfortable to wear, rather than being all dressed up with one's bruised shins and mosquito bites in full view?

Sad that denim is now considered “dressing up”. The slobs are winning and wearing sweatsuits to business meetings and funerals.
