A friend of mine - via Facebook - is arguing that Trump's wall is a pipedream that won't work because of myriad underground tunnels that are dug so deep they are undetectable by GPR . I Googled but couldn't find any current info to use to refute his claim . Anybody here hip to how Trump's wall COULD work ?
Why not both?
A wall is a piece of a solution, not THE solution. Stop ringing the dinner bell is a major part of the solution, too. So is active patrolling of the wall. So is a streamlined deportation process.
Trump has talked about other pieces of his plan besides the wall, but he doesn’t talk about it as a system working together to curtail illegal aliens invading our nation. The press is more than dishonest enough not to talk about it in that way, and his silence on it merely gives the naysayers ammo.
china built that wall to keep the natives form leaving en masse
Ive heard rumors that California is currently at work on plans to do the same thing!
israel is a TINY Nation....thus all that was needed was a tiny wall.
Remember also that we have both Large SOUTHERN and Large Northern Borders to consider.
I think a MISSILE defense would work though
one strike and youre vaporized
The real problem illegals are drug dealers and murderers. The illegal who killed Kate in San Francisco would never be caught with your proposal. The illegals who are actually doing useful jobs are not the worst problem. Your method single out only those workers.
However I have proposed mandated short prison time for CEO’s of any outfit found employing illegals. That would be cheaper and more effective than e-verify, and fines. Corporations will hire illegals and pay fines without hesitation. But mandatory prison time for CEO, will stop them all in their tracks.
The initial draw for illegals is jobs. No jobs, no freebies, they will self deport.
Ask the Chinese why they built a 13,000 mile wall and if it was effective against illegals.
There are many hundreds of miles of border that illegals can cross at will. A few tunnels are not going to carry even a small fraction of the traffic that crosses hundreds of miles of open border. And tunnels are discovered sooner or later on the US side.
And I wouldn’t bet that there are so many that couldn’t be detected with some sort of sonar.
Where the sections of border fence have been built, as in San Diego, it works as intended. Illegals had to go around, and drug traffic was cut down considerably.
What the wall CAN do is stop the swarming multitude from coming in by reducing the number of people who come across illegally.
If anyone can do it, anyone will.
As it gets harder or more expensive, the traffic will slow. The harder and more expensive it gets, the fewer people will just diddy-bop into the US.
Which is also all in his plan.
There’s an old saying that locks help keep honest people honest, but nothing stops your really dedicated thief. A wall is the same thing. It absolutely will not STOP illegals and drug smuggling and the like. But done right (always a tough nut with the government) it will increase the level of dedication needed and that will reduce these problems.
I have an idea for a downward directed shaped charge mine that could put an end to tunneling, too, without causing surface problems...
Part of the problem is that there are almost infinite options, and infinite patrols are simply not possible. The profit side of the balance sheet controls who has what opportunity, and the cartels have much to gain, and incredible resources, courtesy of the US making it relatively easy to smuggle stuff in here.
This will become a matter of national (military) security in short order, if it isn't already.
If you want to be able to screen entry, you need choke points. A wall gives you that.
If you want people to stop coming into your country to get free stuff, maybe you should stop giving them free stuff.
I fully agree. Reducing incentive to be here (aside from becoming American) would help.
Making it harder to get across will reduce the number of people invading. Historically, it is far more effective than doing nothing.
Tell that to someone looking for work.
Do illegals have to be covered under Obamacare?
Build a double fence, and populate the intervening area with cougar and wolves...
Correct, Israel is Tiny and has a tiny budget and a tiny wall.
US is big, has a big budget and can build a big wall.
Drugs smugglers and murderers and rapists are mostly coming across the unprotected southern border.
Mexico will pay for the wall, estimated to cost $5 Billion. Trade deficit with Mexico $45 Billion EVERY YEAR. We have the leverage and Trump has the balls.
Trump also has a history of building things UNDER budget and ahead of schedule.
OTOH Canada wall is not needed urgently, and we have mo leverage over Canada to make them pay for the wall.
That is slightly out of context reply. Me and the other poster were discussing wall versus e-verify. I tried to explain that the most undesirable illegals, such as the illegal who killed Kate in SF will not be trapped by e-verify since they do not work at jobs.
I am by no means favoring illegals taking American jobs. They should all come in legally. They should all be deported (only Trump uses the word DEPORT in 2016) and then may be allowed to come in legally on selective basis, and never on a blanket pardon like Reagan.
How about a 100 foot wide moat fed by water from the Rio Grande river, and populated with gators & crocs & unwanted pythons from Florida? Throw in a few bunches of Piranha fish to feed the crocs and that would drastically reduce need for border guards.
A real 'shovel ready' job.
California would want the water, Gator tacos would become a staple diet on the south side, and you'd be able to spot the illegals by their alligator shoes.
By that logic since condoms are only 99% effective everyone should have unprotected sex.
