From September 28 through Halloween Day, the burger giant is offering its popular patty sandwich inside a pitch-black bun that's flavored with A.1. sauce and sprinkled with white sesame seeds. The burger comes loaded with the usual Whopper fixings (melted American cheese, pickles, white onion, tomato and mayonnaise) but this one also has a dash of A.1. saucesomething I don't think I've tried in over 20 years.
The verdict: it's kinda, sorta...well...okay, really good.
The black bun has the squishiness of a Martin potato roll and a tiny hint of black pepper that's a good complement to the smoky charcoal-broiled burger, crunchy iceberg lettuce and creamy mayo. I can't believe I'm saying this, but the addition of the A.1. sauce really brings out the umami flavors of the sandwich. Who am I?

Skip the premium meat and get an 80/20 ground chuck. The burger needs fat for flavor.
Make a uniform patty about 3/8” thick. Season with salt, pepper and garlic. don’t be shy with the seasoning. Grill on medium high heat. Cheese goes on a minute after you’ve flipped it for the first and only time.
Keep a beer handy to sprinkle on flames if it gets out of control.
Toast buttered buns.
A couple of shots of Worchestershire on the tops of the burgers when you put them on the grill adds a nice touch.
Man.... you need to get out there and try Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s, In-n-Out, or What-A-Burger!
Five guys is horrible.
Smash burger was great.
In n out is great.
Whataburger is great.
Hardee’s is great.
I’m not too discerning, but just couldn’t stomach five guys.
It’s not the bun I worry about.... It’s the crappy tasting burger they put in those things.
Seriously, I gave up on everything BK decades ago. They just plain suck!
You don’t like MAYONNAISE? Mayonnaise is the Nectar of the Gods. Best Foods / Hellmans are the tippy top of taste.
You aren’t one of those people that puts Catsup on Hot Dogs are you? Even Dirty Harry hates people who do that. LOL
Full Disclosure, I just had a Double Double from IN & OUT. The IN & OUT Spread they put on them contains Mayonnaise, SUPER DUPER YUMMY!
Did I mention their French Fries? Catsup works for those.
What I love about Texas is they know that a burger is to be dressed with Mustard. I will pass on the soybean squeezin’s... Little Debbie needs all the mayonnaise she can get.
I like Johnny Rockets burgers, they are pretty tasty. We also have a place here called The Burger Lounge, the meat is supposed to be “Grass Fed” and Organic thus healthier, its alright I guess nothing special.
What part of Cali are you in Sarah. I’m just 40 miles east of LA.
Im on the Westside, near The Grove/Beverly Center if your familiar with the area
Sure, I get out there once in a while. Never heard of Johnny rocket’s though. I’ll try it if I see one.
I do so love a good cheese burger.
Saw them try to cook edible meals with it on Chopped for a Halloween episode.
It wasn't pretty and definitely didn't look tasty.
They also have this Korean BBQ burger which has bacon and a really tasty Korean BBQ sauce.
Definitely worth a look-see.
A few years ago, Wendys had a limited run of their pretzel-dough buns. Those things were damn good!
Yes they were! I might try this new whopper thing. I tried the Burger King Bacon Sundea when they were available....I did not like that. The overdid the bacon to ice cream ratio. If they would have cut the bacon by half, it might have been decent.
Chick fil A is excellent but they don’t serve burgers. So for Chicken it is definitely Chick fil A but if you want a burger it is definitely Burger King.
Yeah Johnny rockets is across from the beverly center but they have other locations..it’s old school looks like a restaurant from the 60s
Thanks, I’m going to look for one out in my neck of the woods.
Thanks.
When a Roy Rogers opened up across the street from where my father worked, he walked in, pointed at the pics on the wall and said I want a roast beef sandwich that looks just like that one.
They freaked out, thinking he was from corporate.
They made him one, though, probably had twice the meat of their regular sandwich.
The things we remember. That was in the 70s. He’s been eating roast beef at the Pearly Gates Restaurant since 2008.
I’m guessing that’s African-American cheese on those burgers?
