Multiple sources told PEOPLE:
Women were first sent to a special two-week training in January to get them ready for the school, which didn't start until April 20. Once there they were allowed to repeat the program until they passed while men were held to a strict pass/fail standard.
Afterward they spent months in a special platoon at Fort Benning getting, among other things, nutritional counseling and full-time training with a Ranger.
While in the special platoon they were taken out to the land navigation course a very tough part of the course that is timed on a regular basis. The men had to see it for the first time when they went to the school.
Once in the school they were allowed to repeat key parts like patrols while special consideration was not given to the men.
A two-star general made personal appearances to cheer them along during one of the most challenging parts of the school, multiple sources tell PEOPLE.

Do you hear anyone, on this forum, talking about aussie training? All things happen now. What we do, is not your purview. Ever.
Australia explores new roles for female soldiers
Map: Which countries allow women in front-line combat roles?
Push for women to fight on front line to improve recruitment
(I have not included posts I've made myself in those examples for reasons that I hope are obvious).
I'll discuss what I decide to here up until a moderator tells me not to. They have a right to say what they want discussed here or not - but I don't think you do. I've been an active member of this site for over a decade and you're about the only person who has ever objected to me commenting on any issue, so I doubt most people agree with you but thanks for your opinion. You're fully entitled to it. But respectfully I disagree. I value my right to freedom of speech, and I think it's important to be honest, not just sycophantic.
What the US does affects other countries. Our special forces cross train with yours, and fight alongside yours. I'm not even close to being special forces, but I served more than once alongside Americans and I was happy to do so because I knew American forces were well trained and well qualified and I could rely on them knowing how to do their job without needing special treatment - not necessarily true of those from every country I served alongside. It actually does matter to me that the United States doesn't lose that. I never want a situation to develop when an Australian servicemen can't trust the professional standards of the American he is serving with. Or vice versa.
I'm one of the best friends Americans have in a world when anti-Americanism is fashionable. But I'm not into concealing my views.
I heard it was just the standard Pre-Ranger school. Same one or of they guys take.
And yes, they both recycled, but there are a ton of men wearing the ranger tab who recycled.
Completely within the confines of the program as it existed before they arrived.
My question was simple.
Are they legit?
Answer I got was - yes.
I will openly admit I asked because I was skeptical. Time will tell. But I’m satisfied with the answer I got.
I do not agree with females being allowed contiguous US Infantry combat positions. There are no allowances. I do not care about Aussie forces. That is the extent of my comments, towards your good effort. Our tradition in the US Military is that US Army Rangers, don’t menstruate. Your Nation, has done well, given all the help it has received from the United States of America- that Great Britain would not give you for 100 years. Yet, you still turned socialist, by your master’s wishes.
As a very Patriotic American veteran writing here: chill out!
What are talking about? Give specifics.
Where’s that colonel who signed up on free republic to lecture us we were sexist and he knew better?
While Matt Bracken was missing I might add...lol
Lecturing Natural man. BTW, I was Infantry. No women in combat ever, period.
America is deep into its insane period. What will follow will be similar to what happened in other nations that went mad. Our enemies will take full advantage, and we will make terrible mistakes. It will not be pretty.
Obama announced he’d be at their graduation before they ever passed the course. These girls had a two star Gen for a lane grader. Maj. Gen’s do not run the Ranger School much less grade a student period, but; this happened.
Ask them about the two star Gen lane grader who is out for his 3rd star.
Just like DoD to spend MORE money on a component with a 77% duty cycle.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen it put more succinctly.
