[August 8, 1967] Who Are the Hippies?
National Review From the NR archives ^ | August 8, 1967 | WILL HERBERG

Posted on 09/26/2015 6:14:45 AM PDT by dontreadthis

he hippie movement, if indeed it can be called a movement, confronts the curious observer as a strange paradox. On the One hand, it is generally held to be part of the New Left, itself a vague conglomerate of youthful and not so youthful malcontents, pronouncing the most frightful imprecations upon our society and culture, and threatening the most ferocious assaults upon things as they are. On the other hand, these hippies appear to be so harmless, so peaceful, so utterly absorbed in love and bongo. Where do they fit into the picture of the New Left? Who are the hippies, what are they? Most emphatically, they are not to be identified with the old-line beatniks, with whom they may have some tenuous historical connection. They do not have the truculence, the menacing air, the ideological ferocity of the old-line beatnik; they do not congregate in foul dens in the slums. They are the “gentle people,” sun worshipers, love-mystics. No, they are not beatniks; but what are they?

Like that “love and peace” group “Occupy”, which counted amongst its peaceful numbers, many rapists, thieves, and vandals.

Yep, they were all anti “the man”, until they became “the man”, and then their true totalitarian colors came out. University campuses (I can’t bring myself to say “campii”) were never as anti-free speech as they have been since the left became the establishment.

Meet the New Left, same as the Old Left. Just skip forward two generations

Best part of the hippie movement was the lack of bras.

I was watching a program about the Zodiac killer; in it, the interviewed a San Francisco cop who was on the street back then.

He said “in 67, the kids were told to bring flowers if they came to San Francisco. By 68, it would have been a good idea to bring a revolver.”

I’ve known several hippies. I’ve noticed if they were hippies in the 60’s, they are hippies in their 60’s. Same goes with their low energy happy go lucky work ethic. Quite harmless.

I’ve also worked with and for the college educated ones that went to college to avoid Vietnam or to just be a part of a protest movement. They are the radicals in power now. They are essentially a fifth column, doing as much damage from within as they can muster. Most are very unhappy people.

The only hippie in our family got a master degree in psychology and now he lives under a bridge in CA. He is probably harmless.

the one thing they got right was a deep distrust of government. the one thing they abandoned was independence from government.

In 1968, my parents heard about the hippies taking over an entire state park in Michigan. We were camping close by so mom and dad took us on a tour.

We drove through the park and saw the long hair and the beards and the sandals and the pipes and the braless women and everything seem to have been tie-dyed. There were little kids who looked like they hadn't had a good meal in a while. They were the biggest bunch of bums I had ever seen. I even saw a man doing something with a dog I will not relate here on this forum. I asked my dad what he thought about them and he said, "It looks like they will never amount to a hill of beans."

Everything the hippies have touched in the last 50 years has turned to crap.

It looks like my dad's observation hit it right out of the park.

The actual hippies were different but generally harmless. Their movement was coopted by the hateful radical left.

Hippies were about partying, smoking pot, sex, wine, rock and roll , folk music, concerts etc. Not necessarily in that order. Politics was a distant last on any list.

The biggest attraction was just being different.

The ones that got invloved seriuosly with left wing politics were barely tolerated by the average hippie.

Left wing politics got left behind by most as they aged.......like everyone else. Liberals run a good scam but most eventually smoke it out.

You are correct that there were two separate components of the youth revolt in 1967, the counterculture and the antiwar movement.

The former were mostly drugged out hippies, the latter were determined leftwing ideologues with an agenda to destroy America as we knew it, and they are the ones in power within academia, the media, and politics.

And yes, the more you give them, the angrier they become. There is also an evil alliance between today’s Left and Islam which bears further inquiry.
