However, your problem is that a President, acting within the limited constitutional powers of his office, can't do anything about it.

Now, if you think the President should act outside the constitution to stop Boeing, then it becomes my problem!

I prefer policies that are business-friendly to policies that involve coercion and punishment.

“WHY?” is Boeing opening the factory in China. Is it our taxes, cost of labor. We need some specifics.

I disagree. America’s government alone in the world, hasn’t involved itself in trade. China’s has. Big time. It is time to take our jobs back.

So what should the policy be?

Should Boeing be prohibited from building a factory in China?

Should we not allow the import of anything from that factory into the U.S.?

Should we put tariffs on Boeing material imported from the China Boeing plant.

Any of these actions would add U.S. jobs in the short run. In the long run I'm not so sure. As I stated in my previous post these actions will make Boeing less competitive and raise the price of airline tickets for U.S. consumers. Those prices take money out of your pocket and mine. That will cause an incremental loss in U.S. jobs. That fact is always ignored in discussions like these. But the fact is that we will lose jobs if Boeing airline prices rise. We will lose Boeing jobs if Boeing is less competitive with Airbus. You cannot ignore that fact.

And how is China doing these days?

Ask Boeing management. Clearly they must think it will make their company more competitive and more profitable. That's what companies do.

Do you really want the U.S. Federal Government making that decision? I prefer leaving it in the hands of the Boeing Board of Directors.

No...I’m asking if the corporate taxes were more reasonable, would Boeing still be going to China?

That's a good question. I don't know. Lower labor costs and and the desire to be more competitive in the Asian market are probably the major drivers but you are right, corporate taxes are certainly a factor.

What if China made the deal conditional on some production in China? Wouldn’t such an opportunity have a price most companies would not refuse?

This doesn’t really seem analogous to outsourcing.

I have a problem with the idea, too.

I want to always know when I’m on a US versus Chinese built airliner.

only an economic neophyte would think building 300 planes in the US - and finishing them elsewhere....is hurting American jobs. Then again, consider the source.

... but I’m part of the 1% who thinks that we should’t have the Federal Government telling companies like Boeing how to run their business. It’s the libertarian in me I guess.

.. people fail to look at the consumer side of the equation ... if you punish Boeing for setting up a factory in China ..... that process raises the price of airplanes that are bought by American airline companies. When you fly your ticket price is going to be higher because of that. And Boeing is going to be less competitive with their European competition because of those higher prices. How many contracts does Boeing have to lose before the gain in employment in the U.S. is wiped out completely?

Bottom line: You have to look at the total impact of letting the government rather than Boeing decide how to run Boeing. For me, the less government the better.

Now see, there you go using logic and irrefutable economic facts - don't you know that's no longer what's wanted around here? You need to get your mind right. What you say is the "libertarian in you" is actually what used to be known as common sense conservatism. No longer.....

And here I thought a foundational element of conservatism was LIMITED GOVERNMENT. Please educate me where in the Constitution such Government intrusion into the business affairs of a corporation resides.

The union (and the bamsters union labor relations board) screwed the company over its SC plans.

That the company would go elsewhere to become competitive is the fault of the thugs and no one else.

DT (somewhat) siding with the thugs is one of the reasons he's not my first choice.

I call China "The Big Thief". Trump is right.

Other countries are smart. WE need to be smart.

NAFTA....go away. We didn't need NAFTA to work with Canada. They've always been a magnificent trade partner.

China is trying to develop domestic airplane manufacturing to compete with Airbus and Boeing. Having Boeing build facilities in China will help that happen. They do the same thing with other products. For example, China required the same type of deals with passenger trains. They stole the technology and are now competing with the companies that sold China the rope to hang themselves.
