OKEMAH, Okla. -- A 4-year-old was allegedly forced by his teacher to write with his right hand, even though hes left-handed.
The child was sent home with a letter about how left-handedness is often associated with evil and the devil.
Zayde is only 4 years old.
It's his first year at Oakes Elementary in Okemah, but his mom kept him home Monday after a dispute with his teacher over being left-handed.
Zayde, like most kids in Pre-K, is learning how to read and write. And like his mom, Alisha, Zayde is a lefty.
From picking things up to throwing things, to batting, to writing, to just coloring youd do at home with him, hes always, always used his left hand, Alisha Sands said.
That was until last week at homework time.
Alisha asked him why he was writing with his right hand, not his left.
I just asked Is there anything his teachers ever asked about his hands? And he raises this one and says this ones bad, Sands said.
Alisha sent the teacher a note and got a strong response.
It was an article calling left-handedness unlucky, evil, and sinister.
It even says for example, the devil is often portrayed as left-handed.
Alisha couldnt believe it.
It breaks my heart for him because someone actually believes that, believes my child is evil because hes left handed, its crazy, Sands said.
She went to the superintendent with the article.
There was no suspension of any kind. There was basically nothing done to this teacher, Sands says, She told them she thought I needed literature on it.
Zayde will likely transfer to another class just two months into the school year.
I dont feel like the school did what they were supposed to for him, Sands said.
NewsChannel 4 called the school and were told the superintendent was out Monday, so they transferred us to the principal at Oakes Elementary.
She said shes aware of the situation and the district is investigating. She hung up before we could ask any questions.
Sands is going to file a formal complaint with the Oklahoma Board of Education.

Coincidence???
True. See my post 78.
Had to write right-handed for several years, then blew ‘em off when it came to cursive training.
to this day though, I write “under-the-line, and slant to the left just to piss off the whole world.

Actually, if you are right handed the entire right side of your body is generally stronger than the left. Vice versa for lefties. When one gets serious about weight lifting they notice this quickly and it takes about a year to achieve a balance of strength between the sides. With some body parts you never achieve that balance.

Any more than calling a little lie a "white" lie is racist.
This sounds like something from the previous millennium.
Is there any truth to the rumor that left-handed people don’t like using paragraphs? I’ve heard that somewhere.
:)
I’m left handed and red headed (sort of, definitely a ginger) so I guess I’m double evil. I wonder whether Neanderthals were left handed.
Us left handed people have been dealing with this kind of bigotry and oppression for centuries. A lefty can’t get no justice in a right man’s world.
Down with righty!
Down with righty!

I married one. I have not been the same since.

It probably came in “handy” when she was riding shotgun in the car.
My buddies called her “Taz”.
For a reason. ;)
We had to go back to my great grandfather to find a leftie and he was also red headed. Of my parents’ 8 grandchildren, 7 of them are gingers including our adopted daughter. Our tow headed son stands out in the photos. I met a red headed seminarian this week and although I would never tell these guys to marry, when I heard he was an only child I did tease him about how maybe it was selfish of him not to contribute to the gene pool.
Add Bill Clinton to the list. (and me)
Want see awkward just watch a right hander try and use their left. Us left handers do much better using our right hand.
