Dentist who killed Cecil the lion speaks out at last after going into hiding

The US dentist whose killing of Cecil the lion fuelled a global backlash has emerged for an interview and says he will return to work on Tuesday.

Walter Palmer has disputed some accounts of the hunt, expressed agitation at the animosity directed at those close to him and says he will be back at work within days.

Palmer, who has spent more than a month out of sight after becoming the target of protests and threats, intends to return to his suburban Minneapolis dental practice on Tuesday.

In an interview on Sunday conducted jointly by The Associated Press and the Minneapolis Star Tribune that advisers said would be the only one granted, Palmer said again that he believes he acted legally and that he was stunned to find out his hunting party had killed one of Zimbabwe's treasured animals.

"If I had known this lion had a name and was important to the country or a study obviously I wouldn't have taken it," Palmer said.

I didn’t think male lions protected their young, I thought they protected their females so they could breed them again.

I know that male cats will kill and eat their young if momma cat doesn’t protect them. I have seen that happen.

Thanks for pointing that out, I forgot to include it. You are right, the guide did try to destroy the collar when he found it. That part is certainly a crime, but on the part of the guide, not the hunter. I’m not sure if the hunter knew about that detail. He may have known, may not have known...

The truth is Cecil was an old lion, at the end of his lifespan and whatever happens to his offspring would have happened when he died a natural death as well.

Another truth is the preservation of the lions and other animals there is paid for by hunters. Anyone that doesn’t believe those animals should be hunted needs to find another way to finance their preservation. To stop hunting without replacing the money it generates for the animals is to sentence the animals to death.

The man may or may not be a jerk but the money that he has spent on hunting trips has saved many of the animals, how many animals have those that condemn him saved?

Let’s re-crucify the hunter.

You usually get the information from your guide, if the guide is not trustworthy... I have no idea if he knew what was going on, but that is something we should know before judging him.

I have heard many stories of hunting guides in the U.S. taking hunters into areas they were not allowed to hunt; National Parks, Indian Reservations, closed hunting areas, and private land without permission.

I am surprised that so many FReepers have swallowed the liberal talking points on this story without bothering to find out the facts.

Given that both client and guide apparently realized Cecil was collared you would have to have a disregard for common sense which beggars belief to argue that Palmer wasn’t aware of what happened to it.

“I was devastated. I could not have seen the collar at night. We would never shoot a collared animal,” Bronkhorst told them. “I was devastated, and so was the client, we were both upset, and I panicked and took it off and put it in a tree. I should have taken it to Parks, I admit that.”

Why was the lion collared, was it to trace his movements?
