SAT Scores Hit Four-Decade Low
Breitbart California ^ | 09/05/2015 | by Chriss W. Street

The most recent Census Bureau data reveals that of the $3.2 trillion in total expenditures by state and local governments in 2012, public education accounted for the highest percent at nearly 28 percent,

California is home to what appears to be the most wasteful K-12 spenders. ... 11 of California’s 16 most-populated cities score in the bottom 25 of U.S. cities on standard tests.

The worst performing cities have in common the very high percentages of households where English is not spoken as a first language. Research shows that the language barrier can have a disastrous effect on learning outcomes.

California, with the largest number of students, tops the English Learners category at 1,413,549. This constitutes about 22.7 percent of the total enrollment in state public schools. A total of 2,685,793 students speak a language other than English in their homes, a number that represents about 43.1 percent of the state’s public school enrollment, with 87 percent Spanish speakers.

The 73 percent majority of English learners are enrolled in the elementary kindergarten through grade six. About 27 percent are enrolled in the secondary grades, seven through twelve.

This seems to indicate that SAT scores will continue to decline as more students who do not speak English in the home pass through high school.

Former President George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind legislation implemented in the 2000s amounted to an attempt to put a stop to unproductive spending by failing school districts. The measure required schools to meet certain performance criteria or risk being taken over or shut down, among other sanctions.

Although the rapid descent of SAT scores slowed during the Bush years, the Obama administration issued waivers and refused to enforce the No Child penalties. Since his inauguration, SAT scores have plummeted.

The community colleges now take up a lot of the load of the old technical schools, and high skrewels would want students to take the test, even though I don’t think it’s required to go to the CCs.

1. Didn't they dumb them down awhile back?

2. Are they allowed to used calculators now?

3. I think this may be skewed by the fact that everyone is taking them now. In the old days, it was mostly for the college bound, wasn't it?

Thanks

Well let’s spend some more money on education. Maybe if we had better facilities and better pensions for the unionized teachers, the SAT scores would rise?

As the United States becomes, demographically, a third world country, our national IQ will drop because of group IQ differences. This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.

SAT is over-rated.

Ole BJ became POTUS with a 1030 SAT.

Raw ambition and treachery far more important.

The raw ambition part is the one most lacking in today’s youts.

If we reverted to the way subjects were taught, and which subjects were taught 50 years ago, the scores would be higher.

To much social engineering getting in the way of learning life skills.

Well I’m quite sure today’s millenials know more about “climate change” than the US Constitution. With the resulting outcome in their voting.

That’s the truth!

Here is an article by Charles Murray who suggests that qualifying exams in specific skills and subjects ( privately organized and administered) is a better solution.

The SAT or ACT is not required at the community college I am now attending, however, all non-transfer students must take placement exams in math and literacy. They must pass these exams to gain entrance to college level courses.

When I retired I decided to study art full-time and **very** seriously. I have been very satisfied with the quality of the courses offered at the community college.

I helped a woman I worked with get her online degree in accounting a few years back. I was surprised they don’t require them to understand and perform math formulas, they just taught them what buttons to push on the calculator. Not understanding the math behind financial information can cause problems.
