Which bill would you take? (vanity)
August 28, 2015 | me

Suppose you were offered either a $5 bill, guaranteed genuine, or a $100 bill that had a 20% chance of being counterfeit. Which bill would you take?

I'd take my chances on the $100 bill. And that's why I'm supporting Trump.

It is way early in the race, and the polls are full of crap. I don't trust much of anything at this point.

It's way too early for predictions for me... no matter how bad anyone wants an answer.

really ... take a walk on the wild side just pretend....what would you do.

Well, I reckon I would take the gamble take the 100. And start looking for a gas station clerk with glasses and a long line to give me some change.

But unfortunately Cruz just doesn't have the pizazz (yet) to capture the swing voters, the Reagan democrats if you will.

Tell me, which candidate has collected more "hard money" from small donors than any other candidate?

I assume you're referring to Cruz, whom I like very much. But here's the question. How many of those donors are middle-of-the-roaders, the folks who ultimately determine most presidential elections?

I'll bet not many. Cruz needs to take a page from the Trump playbook. And I think he will. Cruz is not meeting with Trump just to discuss the weather.

Here’s a different hypothetical. Suppose you are in the market for a used car. You meet a salesman who just seems perfect, who shows you a beautiful, shiny car that he says will be just perfect for you. He shows you around the car, tells you about a couple of it’s features, but mainly keeps telling you that the car will make your life great again.

Now suppose you ask the salesman about the car’s performance, and he can’t (or doesn’t) tell you much. Suppose you ask to see the Carfax report, and the salesman tells you it doesn’t matter (”Are you buying this car’s history, or are you buying it now?” he says). Suppose you try to take a look under the hood, and the salesman keeps trying to redirect your attention, but from the couple of peeks, you can see that the engine is a rusted mess that will never run as advertised.

Suppose, in short, that the used car salesman turns out to be....a used car salesman. THAT is why I will never support Trump.

I think your $5 is too high, unless you are comparing to Cruz or Carson. Then its far too low. But if it’s Jeb it should be about a nickel, and if it’s Hillary, I have to give you money.

Here’s a different hypothetical.

You pose an interesting scenario. But you offered no alternate to that mystery car. So I would perhaps modify your hypothetical. If you were to enter a race, would it better to take a new souped-up car with a questionable history, or an old reliable one with no acceleration?

Except of course there’s no “may” on Trump’s counterfeitness. He’s a BSer who’s switched parties 5 times. The only good part about a Trump presidency is that given his tendencies he won’t stay GOP for 2 terms, probably not even 1. We could get our first party switch in the White House since 1841. Which would be historically interesting, and interesting to see how the mushy middle reacts.

These two things alone make him a YUGE improvement over the current WH resident.

That's a pretty low bar. My dog would be a huge improvement over Obama. I am more concerned whether Trump would be a better president that Cruz or Carson, for example.

If I might jump in...Carson I just don't know about. But Cruz would definitely be a better president than Trump. The problem is that Trump (as of now) is much more electable. Trump is getting disinterested people excited. He is reaching those Reagan democrats, big time. Cruz not so much.

A better argument is that the base determines most presidential elections -- if they're motivated.

Cruz needs to take a page from the Trump playbook. And I think he will. Cruz is not meeting with Trump just to discuss the weather.

I would wager that Cruz is the #2 choice of the vast majority of Trump supporters.

I would also note that the campaign Cruz is conducting is one designed to build his voter count one-by-one. His effort to marshal the churches to help defund Planned Parenthood is an excellent example of this approach. It won't pay off in the polls until it reaches critical mass -- whereupon everybody will be surprised.

+1. You win the prize.

Trump is NOT in the race to win the Presidency. He’s in the race to make some other candidate grow dome stones.

Trump is a business man, a deal maker..... betcha he tells Cruz “Listen son, get out there and talk like a man! The people will love it and I’ll throw my support to you....”

Actually, if it were a payoff table, it pays off if the $100.00 bill had a 94.9% chance of being fake - according to Bayes Theory and a Bayesian Analysis and the resulting ‘payoff table’.

People will take the 100 because if it is fake, some sucker is out there that will take it off their hands.

I'll take Canadian Maple Leafs, thanks in advance.

A pure rabid American for President, coupled with a REAL Constitutional scholar for VP.

Works for me.

If the $100 is a fake, and it gets detected and confiscated by a cashier, you have $0.
And possibly a bad time from the US Treasury Dept.
$5 is greater than $0.

Depends on how small you're talking about. Donald Trump is reportedly 6ft 2in, but to this old newspaper photog's eyes he looks closer to 6 feet even.

Not as small as I am, but I have to duck a lot!

Trump/Cruz 2016 works for me.

Think about what would happen if Trump would announce that he'll run for a single term as president, to fix and repair the damage of the previous decade- Democrat and Republican alike. And that after those four years, he'll let the people decide if now-experienced former vice=president Cruz can continue that job.

I think there'd be a trump landslide of a sort that I've never seen in my life. And I was around when Ike was reelected, though not yet voting then.
