The National Zoo in Washington says its adult female panda has had twins.
The first cub was born Saturday at 5:35 p.m. and the zoo said on Twitter that a second was born at 10:07 p.m. The zoo has said both cubs appear healthy.
If the cubs survive, they would be the 17-year-old panda's third and fourth surviving offspring.

I hope the mama panda allows her twins to live and feed sufficiently. There have been many cases where a wild animal that is caged or held captive, will either kill, eat or ignore their newborn offspring. Theories abound as to why this happens. It’s almost as though the caged, forcefully domesticated parent does not want their young growing up in this artificial environment. The caged parent animal concludes their newborn is better off dead than growing up behind bars.

These babies are the size of a cube of butter. Unreal. Mei Xiang is such a good mama and handles her cubs with such care. I guess the staff will swap out the babies around the clock rather than have her handle both at the same time.
