Lynn Anderson, singer of 'Rose Garden,' dies in Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Lynn Anderson, whose strong, husky voice carried her to the top of the charts with "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden," has died. She was 67.

A statement from the family said she passed away at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, on Thursday. Her publicist said the cause of death was cardiac arrest.

Anderson first soaked up the national spotlight as a young singer on "The Lawrence Welk Show" between 1967 and 1969. Although she was signed to an independent label, the exposure helped her nab a deal with Columbia Records in Nashville.

"He was absolutely wholesome," she said of Welk in a 1987 interview with The Associated Press. "He felt country music was coming into its own and deserved to be on national TV. At that time, I was the only one singing country music on national TV every week. He's one of my heroes and always will be."

Yep it was Saturday. We are a year apart and my grandma too kept me me on Saturday nights. We were in such hurry to grow up and not need grandma to watch us. What I wouldn’t give for one more night in front of a tiny b/w set watching Lawrence Welk (ha had to tell Google that word) with my grandma eating popcorn balls.

Police found her passed out in her car on the side of the road in 2004....seems she had an alcohol and prescription drug problem for some time....like most in the entertainment industry.

On the more positive side, she was also a champion equestrian. He mother was also a country music writer and performer.

This is the song that inspired that Marine Corps recruiting poster...We didn’t promise you a rose garden. Of course, by the time I saw that poster, I was already at MCRD San Diego and had kind of figured it out by then.

Yikes! Some women age like fine wine; others age like milk.

They play reruns here on Saturday nights.

I wish they'd have an entire collection of Welk vids. Too much is lost of the 60's and 70's.

Definitely harkens back to a simpler, better time.

When Miss Rose Garden died, she was living with her boyfriend (partner). OK not exactly a Christian exemplar.

I was 8 when Rose Garden came out.

I remember seeing her on tv.
I also seem to remember having kind of a crush on her.

That’s funny. Every year at Christmas I have a White Elephant party. Several years ago one of my “friends” brought a bottle of Geritol she had found somewhere. It continues to pop up among the gifts every year. Had some younger gals attend last year and had to explain what it was. The other interesting thing that showed up last year was a bottle of Lydia Pinkum with one of the old labels on it. They just don’t make things quite like that any more.

Buddy Emmons, probably the most famous and loved Pedal steel player has also just passed. He probably played on some of her hits.

One of the sad results of modern tech is seeing how people that we aren’t in constant contact with age... suddenly.

And then learn of their past (good or not so good).

I personally think it's BS to compare all of these "Then" and "Now" pictures.
Hell, I looked at lot different in 1969 than I do now. But I retain the same values.
(damn spell check helped this post a lot)
