A Modest Proposal: The Thread Hijack Drinking Game [vanity]
Still me. | Today | Me

Posted on 07/31/2015 11:49:41 AM PDT by Slings and Arrows

The time has come to take action against thread hijackers.

Let me begin with an example of thread hijacking:

Like most Freepers, I am pro-life. Abortion and and euthanasia appall me, and marketing the results even more so. I support candidates who oppose the culture of death, and cheer when it is thwarted.

I also do not find it necessary to mention these facts on EVERY. FREAKING. THREAD.

There is a certain type of Freeper, though, who has no such restraint. For these zealots, any thread that deviates from the pro-life cause, no matter how trivially, is a heresy that must be immediately suppressed.

You are shocked by cruelty to animals? I guess that means you couldn't care less about the cruelty of THE MILLIONS OF CHILDREN ABORTED EVERY YEAR!!!!!

You lost a beloved pet? Why can't you mourn THE THOUSANDS OF ABORTED BABIES WHO DIED THE SAME DAY?!!!!

Your car shredded its transmission and you're looking at thousands of dollars in repairs? Why aren't you thinking about THE BABIES WHO WILL NEVER GROW UP TO BE AUTO MECHANICS BECAUSE THEY WERE ABORTED?!!!!

(OK, maybe I made that last one up.)

Arguing with these people is pointless. It's the same principle as wrestling with a pig - you just get muddy and the pig enjoys it. Similarly, trying to convince them that they are being rude is a waste of time - THE CAUSE is far more important little things like courtesy and respect.

So, what can we do about it?

We can get drunk.

I hereby propose The Thread Hijack Drinking Game. The rules are simple: When a poster tries to hijack an unrelated thread to his or her pet cause, you 1) reply to the hijack attempt by quoting the text in question, followed by the word "DRINK!", and 2) Take a drink (or any volume) of your favorite beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Moderation is suggested on animal cruelty threads to avoid alcohol poisoning.

This game will not, I admit, solve the thread hijacking problem. But after a certain number of attempts we will no longer care.

And if anyone is offended by my little proposal, I can only say...

DRINK!

The tiny orange kitten was rescued by the photographer, who lives in Moscow, Russia.

Ready for departure.

Little Russian kitty! With Lassie.

So cute. What a lovely subject for it’s human.

The New Year kitten is wonderful too.

You could make a coat out of the dog fur.

Is Ceirdwyn going somewhere?

Or are you referring to a giant marshmallow?

Sometimes going the “scenic” rout in tourist season is a headache.

This is Las Vegas: It's always tourist season, here.

Vegas is on my bucket list.

One day I’ll get there. I’m surprised you can get a three or four Stsr hotel for thirty- fifty dollars a night. It’s the plane fare that will be expensive.

My neighbor Debbie is going to be there early next month for the International Sweet Adelines Championship.

There are lots of nice places to stay off the beaten path. Try Hotwire.com when you are ready to come out. You won’t know where you are staying until you book your hotel, or what airlines until you book your flight, but you can bet they will be cheaper than the mainstream.

Come in winter. Nice jacket weather, and you can still swim in heated pools and sunbathe. And there are lots of free things to see and do.

When Igor was in the babrber shop quartet, I almost joined the Sweet Adelines. It was and interesting few years.

Debbie’s been in it for at least 20 years, and she’s not as old as I am. A previous quartet she was in was in the top 20 at the international championship, six or eight years ago. With all the training, travel, fundraising, etc., it pretty much has to be the only activity you do.

A local chorus did a concert at our church this spring. It’s such an uplifting performance, made everyone happy.

Congratulations on snagging the 3000! I thought about it, but my mind was too tired so I just went to bed shortly after 1300, I think. It was just one of those days.

One of my neighbors decided I would be her special pity project and she treats me like I’m a helpless old lady. I stopped her short day before yesterday and told her not to pity me because I didn’t need it. She was insulted. But that was her choice.

In a bit, I will take a shower. I thought of washing clothes today, but they will just have to wait their turn, since I don’t have enough money to do it. They certainly aren’t going anywhere, though I am running out of undies. :o]

Nice kitteh pics to wake up to this morning. I needed the squee after the nightmares woke me up a few hours ago. Sleep was what I really wanted, and 0330 is too early for me to wake up and start my day. It just starts a vicious cycle of going to bed earlier and getting up earlier, and that wears me out. Stinking nightmares...

I could have gone to bed earlier, but I didn’t have any reason to jump up this morning. DP and Bill were supposed to leave for a run at 7:00, but it’s nearly 8:00 and I haven’t even seen Bill.

I dreamed, again, about the church retreat I’ll be helping to run next weekend. At least I didn’t dream again that all the retreatants were rodents: that was really weird.

Usually, after a performance, the groups meet at a designated place, usually a restaurant and have what they call an “afterglow.” That is spectacular in itself.

Everyone will be eating and/or talking and suddenly, someone in the room will start to sing and then they all take their parts and join in. Then they will eat and talk again and it will start all over again.

I still get cold chills when I recall those times. They were truly good memories of my life with Igor, and good memories with him are in short supply.

I can’t think beyond “shower.” I think I’m supposed to have company this afternoon, from the church, but it will be late and probably by the time they leave it will be close to bedtime.

We’re supposed to have showers today and for the next two days, but whether or not we will actually get some here is another story. This time last year, one of the newer sections in the northwest had some really bad flooding, and nowhere else in the valley got much moisture at all.

But that’s the desert for you...

We have a pleasant day forecast, high around 80, almost certainly won’t. The Cub Scouts are hiking this afternoon.

Debbie and I made a date for Hallowe’en: I’ll go over to her house, drink wine, and help pass out candy, giggling more and more loudly.

Oh, that sounds like so much fun! I’ll stay home and forget what day it is, since no kids come here. Too many ol’ fogies, I guess.

My friend Charlie said he wasn’t surprised that I told that woman not to pity me. He said he saw it coming! LOL!
