A Modest Proposal: The Thread Hijack Drinking Game [vanity]
Still me. | Today | Me

Posted on 07/31/2015 11:49:41 AM PDT by Slings and Arrows

The time has come to take action against thread hijackers.

Let me begin with an example of thread hijacking:

Like most Freepers, I am pro-life. Abortion and and euthanasia appall me, and marketing the results even more so. I support candidates who oppose the culture of death, and cheer when it is thwarted.

I also do not find it necessary to mention these facts on EVERY. FREAKING. THREAD.

There is a certain type of Freeper, though, who has no such restraint. For these zealots, any thread that deviates from the pro-life cause, no matter how trivially, is a heresy that must be immediately suppressed.

You are shocked by cruelty to animals? I guess that means you couldn't care less about the cruelty of THE MILLIONS OF CHILDREN ABORTED EVERY YEAR!!!!!

You lost a beloved pet? Why can't you mourn THE THOUSANDS OF ABORTED BABIES WHO DIED THE SAME DAY?!!!!

Your car shredded its transmission and you're looking at thousands of dollars in repairs? Why aren't you thinking about THE BABIES WHO WILL NEVER GROW UP TO BE AUTO MECHANICS BECAUSE THEY WERE ABORTED?!!!!

(OK, maybe I made that last one up.)

Arguing with these people is pointless. It's the same principle as wrestling with a pig - you just get muddy and the pig enjoys it. Similarly, trying to convince them that they are being rude is a waste of time - THE CAUSE is far more important little things like courtesy and respect.

So, what can we do about it?

We can get drunk.

I hereby propose The Thread Hijack Drinking Game. The rules are simple: When a poster tries to hijack an unrelated thread to his or her pet cause, you 1) reply to the hijack attempt by quoting the text in question, followed by the word "DRINK!", and 2) Take a drink (or any volume) of your favorite beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Moderation is suggested on animal cruelty threads to avoid alcohol poisoning.

This game will not, I admit, solve the thread hijacking problem. But after a certain number of attempts we will no longer care.

And if anyone is offended by my little proposal, I can only say...

DRINK!

Thank you, SA&. She’s going to be all right. The vet we have now is a gem,
and she, unlike our former idiot vet who couldn’t diagnose Lucas before he
died, was very competent and able to diagnose and prescribe meds and treat
her for her heart condition and hypernatria.

We’re confident that Bobbie will be all right again. We and Dr. Brooks and
her colleague, Dr. Boyce (they’re both women) will make sure of that.

Yup.
Peaches the peg legged lovebird had a stroke.
So we had to have her put to sleep.
She would chatter to the cats, they’d mutter and murmur back.
Seemed like a conversation.
When she had the stroke, the cats were upset as she wasn’t talking to them.
(Usually she’d say “Pretty bird”. When they say lovebirds aren’t good mimics, it is a continent sized understatement. But she did talk.)

Your kitty is going to be more or less okay once the meds are in her?

Maybe your cats will talk more, now.

Ceirdwyn just gave me what for as it sits.
“Her” bird isn’t throwing seed onto the floor for them to eat.

So now you have to scatter birdseed for the cats. If it’s not one thing, it’s another.

Heck no.
Got rid of the seed.
They’ll live.

Oh, Darks. I’m so sorry. I love birds and would like to have another, but I’m so afraid...

Peaches was positively ancient for what she was.
Majority of the sites out there say 5 to 15 lifespan for a Peachface.
She was at least 13 when we got her.
And that was awhile ago, I might be shorting the amount of time we’ve had her.

Parakeets can live 20 years, so it seems probably that the time frame isn’t a real stretch for a lovebird who has been well cared for.

My sister has an African gray parrot that she got as a fledgling. I think he’s about 20 now, but their life span is about 60 years. Birds live long and prosper!

Darks, I’m sorry about the loss of your beloved bird.

I’ve never had a bird. I’m considering one.

RIP Peaches.

She was a bit of a card.
Took that pic in 2005, she got out of her cage, flitted to the spiderplant, and decided that she was going to, er, sing.
Lovebirds aren't good at singing either.

Thank you!

Tom the son at home is more important than Bobbie the cat at home!

She’s really much more comfortable here. We’re watching her breathing very carefully because that was the siren that made the vets look at her lungs
(hypernatria — lungs full of water) and also her heart. They’re very good
at what they do, and I hope that they never close their practice.

What a pretty bird. Loving the colors!

Now I’m seriously thinking of getting a bird instead of a fish.

Lovebirds can be both fun and difficult.
Peaches was a female, constantly trying to build a nest, and very territorial over her cage.
(Males are more laid back, I am told.)
I had to watch what I fed her as she could easily get “heavy metal toxicity” [nickel or metalloid vitamins in food can do it] and she did not require grit in her food.
[It is darned hard to find food that doesn’t add grit. *UGH*]

I had male vets with my first car who were competent but I always felt they liked dogs more.

With my second fur kid I found a vet practice with several women who liked cats better, and were fresh out of vet school. They tested everything with kitty, and their bedside manner was really nice.

They still send me snail mail to see how I am, which is really really nice. And they knew I was on a fixed income so they let me pay in an installment plan

I should join yelp and give them a wonderful review. :)

It makes sense though. You want the best human doctors for yourself and your family, why shouldn’t you have the best veterinarian ?.

There use to be a wonderful mom and pop pet store in the strip mall across the street from me, but then a big box brand name store came to town and killed it.

The mom and pop guy use to deliver bags and cans of Hills and clip kitties nails, if I would get a bird from him and have trouble he would come over.

Now that the big box store killed the mom and pop I’m kinda boycotting it, I miss my mom and pop. Maybe I’m better off with a fish, dang it. Until I get a cat of course.
