A fresh Start: Microsoft's Windows 10 wins plaudits from early users

Microsoft Corp's launch of its first new operating system in almost three years, designed to work across laptops, desktop and smartphones, won mostly positive reviews for its user-friendly and feature-packed interface.

The launch was seen critical for the company, particularly after the poor response to Windows 8, an ambitious redesign that confused many users by ditching the start button menu and introducing a new layout.

The new OS, launched on Wednesday, will be available as a free upgrade for users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1.

Wall Street Journal's Geoffrey Fowler said Windows 10 fixes most of the issues with Windows 8 and improves on Windows 7, Microsoft's most popular OS in recent years.

For one, the start button is back.

"Three months of testing Windows 10 determined that this familiar yet fresh overhaul far outweighs any problems," Fowler wrote in his review.

By offering free upgrades, Microsoft aims to put the system on as many devices as possible. The company would then make up for any lost revenue by selling services such as Office over the Internet, or cloud.

FBR Capital Markets analyst Daniel Ives said the cloud strategy could generate a new revenue stream.

"It's a step in the right direction. They went back to their core DNA around software and a cloud-centric model and ultimately Windows as a service, a subscription model," Ives told Reuters.

Microsoft, which unveiled Windows 10 in September, skipped Windows 9 altogether, to put some distance between the new system and Windows 8.

So the users who didn’t get bricked are saying it works or something.

Oh, FFS, would you stop with this BS already. That wasn't the reason!

. . .skipped Windows 9 altogether, to put some distance between the new system and Windows 8."

That's a false statement. They skipped "9" because it would break a lot of legacy code.

and ultimately Windows as a service, a subscription model

Hang on, is there an annual fee for this OS?

So what’s the REAL reason for skipping Windows 9?

No, there is no fee it is an in place upgrade and I see it as a smart move...

Lower the support load caused by Win 7/8/8.1 users and move them to a stable platform that mitigates the negatives and moves the whole environment forward.

As to the subscription model it makes sense in a more mobile world to redistribute the computing power and allow the functions. Could you really imagine loading MS Office on your phone??

Dude, they are back on track and I got my copy of 10 and cannot wait to load it

In order to prevent confusion among coders and scripters.

When scripting a search for a system by operating system, many coders (older programs) and scripters will use a wildcard to catch both Windows 95 and Windows 98. This would be coded as such:

get-adcomputer -filter {operatingsystem -like “Windows9*”}

This PowerShell command would get you all computers in Active Directory that are either Windows 95 or 98. (note: shame on you if you have Windows 95 or 98 joined to you domain.) If they released the new OS as Windows 9, they would’ve been caught up in those results, which would be a royal pain to sort through for accurate results.

No one can assure me that my software will work, I'm sitting it out.

I did get the download notice today.

I wonder if my paid for copy of MS Office will break if I upgrade and if I'll be forced into buying it again. Hmmm.

I’ve put it on my Dell Latitude laptop and it seems to be working. I have networked my printer to it, set up my email, and cruised the internet. It still has some of the look of Win 8 and a lot of Win 7. Ok for now.
