I don't think its because there's no ‘fear of God’ (although there doesn't seem to be much anymore). I think it's because we're losing the sense that we are here for a purpose, that there is a spiritual meaning to life, and that life is an opportunity to better ourselves, grow beyond ourselves, and to grow spiritually.
When you take God out of the equation, it's much easier to rationalize any behavior (e.g. ‘It's justified if we kill all those who can't be reeducated. It's for the greater good.’). This kind of rationalization drives American politics right now, and the electorate doesn't care anymore - as long as their side wins.
God didn't go away. We did.

OK, in fact Democrats used the Treasury to get over their involvement in slavery, the kkk and to straight out buy votes.
IMO where those on the sidelines got it wrong was they figured because of the American sense of pride and avoiding shame that we could never fall to being bought off.
I don't think conservatives or others at all foresaw the brainwashing in schools and the loss of ability to feel shame that has enabled.our current condition.
The problem in America is God and especially Jesus has been relegated to a position approachable only at the risk of your job or life
This August, at the school board meeting, I will announce that determination by the USSC, state that I don't need further "permission" than the Constitution, and I will open our board meeting with prayer.
