My Dad and I used to watch the Jackie Gleason Show. Dad turned 90 last June, but his memory is not so good and I don't have anybody to share these memories with anymore. So I thought someone on free republic might have some.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Joe the Bartender skits with Jackie Gleason and Frank Fontaine. Remember all the locals who dropped into Joe's Bar. Fatso Fogerty, Belly Laughs Bailey, Muriel Bushkirk, Bookshelf Robinson, Fruitie Tuttie, Alderman Patty Notto, Jimmy Machina, Joe Gold, and most of all Gaylord Farquar?

Did he used to say,,,

“And away we go!” ?

The old memory is a bit foggy, but I think he used to say that to introduce the next part of the show.

I was born way too late. This kind of music speaks to my SOUL!

Glad you got to enjoy it the first time around. :)

He would have Johnny Olson (later known of course for “Come on down” on “The Price is Right”) flown in to Miami just to announce for his TV shows since he thought so highly of Olson’s talents in that area.

Channel 11 in NYC had the Mooners on every Saturday at 11 and 11:30. Just turned it on and they Have Everybody Loves Raymond. I hate Raymond now.

This post reminds me of a Steven Wright joke:

“I like to reminisce with people I don’t know... Granted, it takes longer.”

I did watch The Honeymooners, but my memories of it are vague impressions rather than specifics. I did have a friend named Ed Norton who had a similar build to the one in the show and he was a funny guy in a sort of similar kind of way. It has been a long time since I’ve seen him, too (17 years - time flies), and he’s slipping into the vague impressions part of my memory as well.

I was a kid at the time, and it happened during the closing minutes of the show. I remember him slipping and falling. This link gives a little more info:

Oh yeah. He said it all the time.. He would stand in front of the curtain. And his orchestra and how can I forget those beautiful girls...

The Jackie Gleason was so good in so many ways, but even more of a cut above when Art Carney was on the same stage.

The thing about that was that Gleason knew it.

my generation loved the rock and roll. And I learned to get used to it. But there is no replacement for good old swing.

I just realized you said the Jackie Gleason Show, not the Honeymooners. I don’t think I ever saw that, and I was only vaguely aware of its existence. I might have to consult YouTube.
