Stupid British vs. Japan soccer

Posted on 07/02/2015 6:39:30 PM PDT by djf

Alright I must have seen this clip a hundred times... a woman, dressed in white, kicks a soccer ball - it hits the bar, but then seems to go in, then bounces out. The goal is defended by a woman in a dark uniform with dark hair, I'm assuming she's Japanese.

Now everyone is making a big deal of this saying she "scored her own goal" or some other BS and I'm sick of it can someone PLEASE explain to me what happened?

Well I understand the rules.

I was just unfamiliar with that “I’ll just kick it towards my own goal, that’ll befuddle them!” nuance.

Soccer was invented by European woman who needed something to do while their men did the cooking. oh, yeah, I hate soccer.

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who belong to one set, and those who belong to its complement.

“Laura Bassett scored into her own net during second-half stoppage time, giving Japan a 2-1 victory over England on Wednesday in a Women’s World Cup semifinal.

The decisive goal came when Japan’s Nahomi Kawasumi drove up the right side and sent a cross into the middle for Yuki Ogimi. Bassett reached out with her right foot and caught the ball flush, inadvertently sending it toward her net. The ball struck the crossbar and bounced in before goalkeeper Karen Bardsley could stop it.”

BTW - stoppage time is the few minutes added onto the game due to people getting hurt. The actual clock doesn’t stop, but the ref keeps track of it. And when the regular game time is up (90 minutes), everyone finds out what the ref has added on.

At least she was trying to defend - one of the posters made it sound like she was just kicking it back to her keeper for the keeper to kick it up the field. That would have been REALLY embarassing.

Hey - no name calling! (I’m gonna tell mooooommmmmm!)

I used to coach kids soccer - its fun. Watching the adults play - not so much. But I do watch it if it is a big game. I’ll try to remember to tune in for the women’s final (USA vs. Japan) this Sunday afternoon. I think I read where the last time (or at some point) we lost to Japan in the final game, so this is a grudge match.

Goalies wear different colors so it is easy to recognize them. They are the only ones allowed to use their hands (with the exception of the throw in after the ball has gone out of bounds) so it seems reasonable to make them easily distinguishable in a group of people vying for the ball.

An offensive play that can result in a goal being scored is when the ball is booted from the flanks across the front of the the goalmouth. An offensive striker can run onto it and with foot or head can quickly change the ball's direction somewhere around 90° toward the goalmouth. A defender must attempt to clear these crossing passes. In this case that you cite the defender did not lift the ball quite high enough and it ricocheted off the crossbar into the goal. It's called an "own goal", a term that is also appropriate for use in basketball, and as happened at the major college level as recently as this past year in the final second to decide the outcome of the game.

BTW, off of what I've watched, I think the American women's team is faster, more fit, and more skilled than either the English or Japaneses sides in that other semi-final game, so I'm optimistic for the USA taking the title.

Well I understand the rules.

Clearly by your comments here you do not.

If you don't like the game don't watch.

I do appreciate for some type of uber-American, dismissing soccer (what is it with soccer? Do they get as equally snarky about curling or water polo or badminton?) is seen as a badge of honour but really, are you telling us you can’t cope with the very simple concept of scoring an own-goal? And why such a thing would be upsetting to a player in the dying seconds of the semi-final of a world championship?

Soccer is so popular around the world is because it is actually a very simple game, it can be played almost anywhere with anything remotely akin to a ball and with any number of players. Can the same be said for American Football, Baseball or Basketball?

I am all for American exceptionalism but showing what a big tough American you are by sneering at a sport that you are too ignorant to understand just makes you look kinda stupid, if you will forgive me for saying so.

It’s not a ‘British’ team, but an English team. Wales, Scotland, and Northern Island have their own soccer teams for international play.

So do these U.S. possessions: American Samoa (in Oceania), Guam (in Asia), and Puerto Rico and the U.S.V.I. (in CONCACAF, along with the U.S. itself). BTW CONCACAF sounds like a kind of coffee.
