Some time after I bought my first gun, I got a robocall from the National Rifle Association, asking me to join. After the customary Please stay on the line. . . from a pleasant but earnest voice, I recoiled from the barkings of an angry-sounding man: Did I know that Barack Hussein Obama and European leaders are meeting on American soil right now, at this very moment, to plot the confiscation of my guns?
The caller continued with his insinuations of an imminent United Nations plot against America, but before I could be handed off to a live operator, I hung up the phone.
I was amused, and then insulted, that someone would think I was dumb enough to fall for such a pitch. But the sad truth is that there are enough people willing to open their checkbooks to make such a noxious fundraising appeal worthwhile.
The NRA claims to have 5 million dues-paying members (though theres some reason to believe this figure is inflated). That sounds formidable, until one considers that there are approximately 50 million adults who own firearms. Still, the organization has successfully positioned itself as the singular representation of gun owners. For decades theyve worked to defend and expand access to firearms in spite of polls showing that most Americans, including gun owners, favor laws that would limit access in various reasonable ways (even three-quarters of NRA households favor background checks prior to private gun sales). But when a U.S. congresswoman was shot in the face, the NRA made certain that no law was passed that would have made her safer. Theres no doubt that the NRA does have some grass-roots support, but its smaller than we think. The NRA does not represent all gun owners, and it certainly doesnt represent me.

Is this guy a Fudd?
You are welcome to your opinion...as am I.
I am in the habit of paying my bills when they arrive. This one was 8 months early.
Is this along the lines of. “I am a lifelong Republican, But______________.” or, “I have always voted straight Republican , but this time_____________.”?
We really have come a long way, though with still quite a distance to go.
Prior to the Heller decision in 2008 this author would have assured us that the Second Amendment only protects the right of Militias to be armed. Perhaps in another twenty years or so there might be a recognized right to bear arms in Kalifornia.
Driving should be a right, like gun ownership, not a privilege that is parceled out by government, and strictly regulated. That which is regulated can be taken away easily.
“...Edward Bulwer-Lytton”
He was the same “dark and stormy night” guy Snoopy would plagiarize so often. Anybody that can inspire an anthropomorphized beagle is alright in my book.
I love the GOA, but they’re the yapping chihuahua to the NRA’s 800-lb gorilla. Sure, the NRA has an agressive funding arm. If you can’t handle a few mailings and phone calls, then paraphrasing Apocalypse Now, IMO you’re wrapped a little too tight for firearms.
The NRA is the next organized target of the Confederate Battle Flag hating lefties.
Of course: hunting, that is all the 2ndA is about to lying liberal trolls like this writer. He just took the opportunity to slip that in.
Hmmmm, bit time soccer fan.........
Your a creepy CANUK, nuff said.
Get deep psychological counselling, moron. You need it.

I'm not an NRA member, but I despise David Fellerath.
I was more concerned about the way they used the funds from my membership, as recently as last year.
No. The attacks of 09/11 would have occurred during a Gore presidency, and Gore and his fellow Democrats in congress would have surrendered.
Good point.
As did I, after NRA started supporting gun control legislation in my home state. But do not neglect your state association or associations, and consider, as I have, those in your neighboring state.
Our local gun club has also dropped the NRA as our range insurance carrier.
