Requesting help from Fellow Freepers. Major screw-up. Flew in from S. Korea and tried to update my TOMTOM GPS in order to help me find my way around the Sumter, SC area.
To make a long story short....I think I corrupted and/or deleted files actually embedded on the GPS. Now can't get it to do anything.
Does anyone have a link to software that can restore the GPS to factory settings? I'd be happy with that. Or, maybe a POC of someone who specializes in restoring GPS devices? Thought they would be plentiful but I guess not.
The GPS is a TOMTOM XL 310. Older model. Hardware is cherry and barely used. The software is totally hosed. Hate to throw it away. Or, is this the only option? I feel like a dunce. When it comes to computers and handheld devices, maybe I am. Thanks.
Wait. Nobody start until I get another beer.
“Turn Right...”
If not, did you plug it in?
LOL!!!
If you had it running in another hemisphere, then it probably thinks it’s still there. The quickest way is to re-inaitialize it.. Usually asks wheat hemisphere you’re in...
Otherwise, most will figure it out in half-hour or so if you leave the receiver in view of the sky.
Te-initialize could be a menu item, or remove/replace the battery. Don’t know tomtom.
Are you sure you’re logged in?

see pg 38 for factory resets
Thanks, TomGuy. Will follow the link and keep my fingers crossed.
I had to re-flash the firmware on one.
For what it is worth, I’m home on leave and hope to do some traveling. Sure I have maps and know how to use them. GPS works better though. Thanks for your non-help.
Unfortunately it was plugged in. I would be better off if I hadn’t. Maybe someday I can be of help to you.
Just use WAZE. It’s free and it is 1000 times better than Tom Tom. If your phone has GPS (and almost all of them do) then just get the Waze app. I use it every day. My $200 GPS sits in the glove compartment.
I hadn’t thought of that. Take the battery out and replace it. Will give it a try. Thanks for the tip.
How? Thanks.
Hmmmm. Well, I'm out of ideas.
Maybe someday I can be of help to you.
I look forward to it.
BTW, welcome home. Don't let these yahoos get your goat with their smart-ass "advice".
You have had enough. Good night......:)
