Cop who accidentally shot a four-year-old girl instead of a charging dog is identified

The Ohio police officer who missed when he shot at a charging 40lb dog and accidentally hit a four-year-old girl in the right leg has been identified as a five-year veteran of the force. [snip]

Thomas was investigating a hit-and-run case when he heard cries for help from a nearby home in Whitehall regarding the girl's mother, who had cut herself, the Columbus Dispatch said.

When the officer tried to enter the home to provide help, the family's mixed-breed dog charged at him in the doorway, said Columbus Police Department spokeswoman Denise Alex-Bouzounis.

He fired off a shot but missed as the bullet accidentally struck the girl instead, NBC4 reported. [snip]

'[The officer] was a big guy and they have tasers and clubs and stuff,' Parlsey told 10tv. 'I don't know why you would raise a gun. I really don't agree with him just pulling his gun out and trying to shoot the dog.' [snip] 'They should have better training for situations like this,' Baker added.

Ignore the fact that people have brought court cases—and lost-—when the police did *not* come or failed to come in time, and the court ruled against those individuals. Keep on following the faith of State worship. Surely *that* will save you.

You may want to take up that faith with Yahweh; if I were you, I’d place my trust in Him, and not The State.

Of course, if such a faith really were satisfactory, you wouldn’t be attempting to ensnare others in it, would you?

Why aren't you chasing your elected representatives with as much effort as you do cops who only try to obey/enforce the law?

Hello, hello, the cops don’t pass the laws and they aren’t judges either. You’re angry at the wrong people.

The sad thing is, folks like that have no idea how expendable they are to the State. They place their faith in a false god, and become angry when called on it, yet are not too ashamed to keep doing it.

Yet this officer chose to be judge and jury, passing judgment on a dog who not only failed to attack the officer before the fool shot his young mistress, but failed to attack the officer after the shooting of said little girl.

But what are little four year old girls when there is worship of the State to be done?

A single encounter with an Agent of the State turned one medical emergency into two for the family in the OP.

But best keep worshiping, I mean, even those who shoot children are worthy of unquestioning devotion, right?

Did that cop do something I don’t like? Absolutely. But so has my mother.

He didn’t intend to shoot the child. He will pay whatever price the legislatures and judges decide.

I just hope you’ve been voting for the best representatives.

Had any non-cop done what he had done, he would have been arrested for negligent shooting.

It's not a matter of whether you like it or not--the officer has not been (and likely will not be) treated the same way anyone else would be treated if they negligently fired their weapon.

The reality is: he will almost certainly either not be sentenced or receive a reduced sentence due to his profession.

But that doesn't make this family any less violated.

It doesn't make a little girl any less traumatized.

Any time the police shoot man or beast negligently, it is a crime, not a mistake.

More likely, he will be treated as the officer who killed Aiyana Jones, as the officer who shot Dakota Corbitt----the child pays the price (with her life, in the former case; hospitalized in the latter). His own Sheriff may continue to defend him, as did the Sheriff in Georgia after his men were known to have thrown a live grenade in a baby's crib.

As soon as the outrage blows over, the officer will be back on the street. (It is known that the officer who killed Aiyana Jones was reinstated).

Then folks like you can go back to defending them, making excuses for them, and otherwise enabling the status quo.

How many more children will needlessly suffer or die before you stop making excuses, I wonder?

This can be stopped, even now. But it will require those who are content with the status quo to take an uncomfortable stance.

It’s clear that the officer doesn’t consider the mere *presence* of other people as a good reason to refrain from shooting. Since he willingly shot when a child was *directly* in the path of the bullet, it is safe to assume that had any other person been directly in the path of the bullet, he would have had no qualms shooting.

Clearly the only human’s safety he was concerned with was his own safety.

Those who would call the cops for their safety: consider well the lesson. Given a choice between ensuring your safety and their own, guess what choice will be made?

My dad was a cop back in the 1970’s.

He was taught that, to subdue an attacking dog, ‘offer’ the dog your forearm (preferably your non-dominate arm). Once the animal clamps on, get your thumb into the animal’s mouth - under the tongue - and grab a hold with all your might. The animal will attempt to retreat, but you’re not to let go. With a hard enough twist, you can dislocate the dog’s jaw and end the battle.

Shooting was considered unnecessary and unsafe, especially in populated areas.
