my convert friend said that the real answer was we are saved by grace....I said no...we are saved by faith alone, just as the Bible says.

Ephesians 2:8 says we are saved BY grace, through faith, and even that faith is not of ourselves but rather is the gift of God.

Yes. But. Grace can give us many gifts, not just faith. While faith comes through grace, it is faith that is essential.

I see grace as the mechanism through which faith is given. But, there are other gifts we can get through grace which, while good, are not essential to salvation. Faith is. Lots of folks do good deeds, but if they don’t act through the gift of faith they are just good things.
