God never gives you more than you can handle...

Posted on 06/10/2015 11:41:33 AM PDT by MNDude

I was listening a little bit to Dennis Prager yesterday, and his Ultimate Issues issue of the day was about when people try to comfort someone suffering by telling them "don't worry, God never gives you more than you can handle."

I just heard a little bit of the program, but his stance was these are the least comforting words ever created and this is not found in the Bible.

What are your thoughts on this saying?

The problem is we think we know more than God and thus think we cannot handle anymore.

My brother proved that wrong.

Usually Corinthians 10:13 is cited.

It makes me cringe.

It is not Biblical.

It doesn’t make rational sense.

It is not true on its face. Christians die. Christians die from persecution. Christians suffer and die from persecution.

It also suggests God is cruel. God will let you suffer and suffer and suffer and suffer but won’t let you die to end the suffering.

I am a Bible-believing, God-fearing, Christ-following (at least I aim to be) Christian. This non-Biblical saying makes me cringe.

It’s a comforting saying, but God gives some people more than they can handle.

Absolutely unbiblical. Scripture tells us that He can subject us to whatever He decides is necessary...but He will never leave, nor forsake any of His chosen believers. Dennis is a Jew who rejects Jesus as the Messiah of Israel. Tragic, although he is a nice fellow.

Sounds like something they’d say in AA.

I’ve heard that statement many times over the years and think it’s rather trite and not exactly biblical.

Jesus tells us we will have troubles in this world, but be of good cheer as he has overcome the world. It is only by abiding and trusting in Christ that we can handle anything.

I’ve had my share of tribulations and praying to God for hope and strength helped me a lot.

◄ 1 Corinthians 10:13 ►

(New International Version)

"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."

This is the verse that came to my mind...however, it is in the new testament and Dennis Prager is an Orthodox Jewish man. It is not EXACTLY what he said to the person but it may have been in the back of his mind.

He may have been quoting from the Talmud, or some other Sages, because I know of no OT Scripture that matches what he said.

Sorry to hear that.

After the sudden death of my Wife in 07 and the loss of my retirement due to the Banking BS in 08, I had pretty much lost everything and was at rock bottom.

2015, I'm digging my way back, but can still scratch the rocks ;-(

It’s a comforting saying,

Comforting? Perhaps it's a rah-rah attempt to encourage a person to keep trying, and not check out.

The scripture quote is as follows:'

1 Corinthians 10:13 (KJ21) 13 There hath no temptation taken hold of you but such as is common to man. But God is faithful; He will not suffer you to be tempted beyond that which ye are able to bear, but with the temptation will also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

The context of that is "temptation". It does not refer to health, which is a common mistake. Everyone of us will eventually see our bodies fail due to more than it can bear.

Thoughts: it doesn't exist in scripture. What is often misquoted or twisted is 1 Corinthians 10:13, which promises us that God will not allow any temptation to seize us beyond that which we can bear. There are too many people who talk about the Bible but don't bother reading what it says beforehand.

My thought is that sometimes God gives you an F5 tornado and you end up dead.

I find this very comforting:

1 Corinthians 10:13 King James Version (KJV)

13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
