Flaming Hawk With Snake in Its Talons Sparks Fire Near La Jolla
NBC Bay Area ^ | Tuesday, Jun 9, 2015 | R. Stickney

Posted on 06/09/2015 5:58:35 PM PDT by nickcarraway

The cause of an early morning fire north of San Diego was an electrocuted bird falling from an active power line

A bird carrying a snake in its talons struck power lines north of San Diego, sparking a hillside fire just west of The Merge.

San Diego Police arrived to the location on Dunhill Street near the intersection of Interstates 5 and 805 just before 6 a.m.

Flames were burning very close to businesses including the General Atomics building, officials said.

Officers called in San Diego Fire-Rescue crews who contained the fire within an hour.

Fire officials initially told NBC 7 a bird with a snake in its mouth was electrocuted on a power line and fell to the ground, sparking the fire. A photo released by officials later shows the snake in the hawk's grasp.

"A hawk that hit the high voltage power line, caught fire, and fell to the ground," SD Fire-Rescue spokesperson Lee Swanson said in a written release.

There were no structures damaged and no evacuations ordered.

This area of San Diego is home to many companies in the region's biochemical industry.

Wow. Almost two hours’ worth of napping. I will have to wait a bit to see if I feel any better, but I don’t think there is time for me to shower and get to church. I’m not in the hurrying mode...

We have one somewhere out back. It's still around - found its shed...

It's bigger now.

*shudder*

Out here, about all we have are diamondbacks. Maybe a few odd grass snakes, and a blow snake or two, but there isn’t much shelter for them, or good hunting areas. Only the rattlers thrive.

That is a cornsnake. Nonpoisonous and eats things like rodents...

There are supposedly timber rattlers in the area but I have never seen one. Copperheads yes, but not often. Never start moving a rock or wood pile that has been there for a while unless you have on long sleeves and gloves.. ;-)

Most often spotted snake here is the common Garter Snake. I often see them ‘running’ away after I have mowed over their hiding spot in the tall advanced grass substitute..

Could be head squirrels or drawer possums.

Having spent most of my childhood in the high desert, we were taught never to step over a log or a large rock, but to walk around it or dislodge it, first. I’m not necessarily “afraid” of snakes, and have been known to handle them, but I have a healthy respect for anything in the wild. I prefer to give all critters a wide berth, so they can do what it is that they do so well. :o]

And because of the real danger of ticks in the sagebrush and scrub oak, it was always long sleeves and long pants. We spent our summer scrambling around in the foothills and canyons.

long sleeves and long pants..

..and work boots.. ;-)

Mine are 9" - with the BDU's tucked in. Although that's more to keep the ticks from crawling up the inside of the pant leg - it's easier to spot them if they must stay on the visible side of the clothing. ;-)

I can't recall any reports of rattler bites around here but you hear of copperhead bites periodically. Nonetheless, the NYS Dept of Environmental Conservation (our tax dollars at work..) says we're in timber rattler territory..

As is Tax Chick and NNB (I think)..

We had cowboy boots...

Of course, the area we used to play in and got so much enjoyment from is now high density housing... How sad...

I had a tick crawling on me last night.

My new procedure is to prepare them for slide viewing with Scotch tape. They remain visible, and they don’t crawl away.

Stick, wrap, done.

Ugh. I don’t have an opinion on snakes one way or another. But I rather look at things that are squee.

Like kittehs or puppehs or celebrate Bunday.

(today is Bunday)

Sweets hit the drawer possum jackpot one fine day.
She was looking for socks or something and found possum.
Plural.
Dramatised version was that she did a double take just to make sure she actually saw a possum or several in the dresser drawers.

I can’t keep up with things today, so I’m going to quit while I’m ahead and take some Ibuprofen and go lie down.

See all y’all tomorrow...

Now I am working on a short piece I can throw up for 99 cents, sort of Laurel & Hardy in space (echoes... space..space..space..)

It’s supposed to be a bit funny but I’m not that good at funny.

“Noobs with wrenches”, a slapstick space jaunt where two hopelessly inept new recruit maintenance crew inadvertently save the space station by accidentally vacuum purging a malfunctioning and homicidal helperbot AND the lawyerbot sent to crush the station under paralyzing tax liens.
